Why Nature Has Been My Lifelong Place of Worship

We are hardwired to connect with the elements, Nature’s creatures and the living essence of our planet.

Biophilia: A hypothetical human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms in nature: a desire or tendency to commune with nature. Merriam Webster's definition of the term was coined by Dr Edward O. Wilson, Harvard naturalist.

I drank the last drops of a morning latte after reading the latest bad news regarding human legislation. I could feel my face heating up with indignation. My ears seemed inflamed as well. I put my hands up and checked them. Yep, steam pouring out both sides.

Angry Men and a few women as well seemed determined to cast their temple of doom on women’s basic human rights. While doing their dirty work, they couldn’t resist flinging a few bombs at our planet. Cobbling environmental regulations in our 12th hour, climate change peril.

I threw the paper down in disgust and stormed over to the kitchen to wash my cup. It was a deep blue, sunny day in the forest and the windows above the sink were wide open. I turned off the water and then I heard it.

“Hey, over here, come on out. We have something for you.”

This intriguing, telepathic call immediately engaged my curiosity. In case you’re thinking I’ve lost my mind, I have. I released mental censors regarding Nature long ago. I’ve communed with trees, plants, Earth and her creatures since I was a young child. The rewards have been bountiful. This moment was no exception.

Walking barefoot through the meadow, I tracked the lure up to our vibrantly blooming chocolate lilies. They are a bit rare and our land hosts a large patch. We had the coldest winter ever recorded and a very wet, cool Spring. Our pond freezing conditions suited them. I had never seen them this healthy and plentiful.

“Lie down among us dear one. We know your spirit is grieved. We can heal you.”

I did as instructed, and peered into the yellow striped centre of one exceedingly tall lilies. I noticed with excitement a few delicate, magenta wild orchids had volunteered among them. My inner child emerged, filled with wonder and awe.

Gratitude streamed through my heart after I left the lilies. I laced my shoes and set out on a morning walk with an adjusted mindset. Immersion in Nature had shifted my dross to shine.

Nature is a direct teacher of living alchemy. The highest of adept Magicians, she composts her dead material into new life. Right there in front of our eyes.

I placed my trust in her hands as a young child and did so instinctively, without thought. I decided to learn and follow her laws.

It was the wisest decision I’ve made in life.

Human laws can be arbitrary and fickle, depending on the people who create them. Natural laws stem from universal forces and govern our human laws whether we recognize that or not. All law is derived from the principles of Nature.

Nature’s laws were embedded in human consciousness long ago. Humans obeyed them in order to survive and thrive. Once upon a time, we lived in harmony with Nature. Now many of us have disengaged and closed the door on our communion.

Nature is the original advocate for equal rights. She doesn’t care what color your skin is, what religion you choose if any, what country you live in, or your personal identification. Here are a few of her basic principles.

The law of Oneness: This is the foundational law from which all others spring. It is the awareness of our connection to life in its many forms. Once our web is recognized, our compassion for others and our planet is greatly enhanced.

If we cannot manage to integrate this primary law into our daily lives, we will eventually cease to exist. Nature will preserve herself. If we continue damaging her health, she will take the necessary measures to regain her balance.

Can Nature survive without us? Yes. Can we survive without her? No.

The Law of Vibration: Everything in Nature is constantly changing and yet can appear to maintain form. The river keeps moving along but contains itself as well. Sensing vibrational emanations in life moves us into a feeling, not thinking state. It’s subtle energy working on unseen levels and our minds have difficulty processing it.

The Beat generation and hippies did not coin the word ‘vibration’ as a term for realms hidden from view. These people represented a contemporary expression of many subcultures and Native tribes throughout history. Sensitives actively engage with shifts in vibrational fields.

Psychotropic plant medicines can gift humans with a deeper relationship to the energetic fields of Nature. Many people experience an enhanced awareness of vibratory fields under the influence of magic mushrooms. Some sense vibrations naturally as they are in harmony with their own Being.

The Law of Attraction: This one is popular and has received the most attention in New Age material. It has often been misunderstood. Attraction is not about the material world or your love life. It’s about the bee attracted to the flower as it goes about pollinating, creating honey and spreading diversity in the plant kingdom. It’s the pulse of life transporting sustenance to other life.

The law of Compensation: Whatever you sow you shall also reap. The loaf of bread we buy in the store arrived on the shelf via farmers spreading their seeds and harvesting their grain. We forget the hard work going into our groceries until we try gardening.

The Law of Gender: Feminine and masculine principles co-exist within all of us, regardless of our biological gender or identification. This one is a stumbling block for many and a law mystics have engaged with through the ages. The creation of a sacred marriage within ourselves is a divine expression of Holistic completion.

The feminine principle is becoming extinct in our human fray. A serious imbalance has been created through thousands of years of patriarchal domination. Look where it’s landed us. Billionaires building rockets in case they need an emergency exit.

Feminine and masculine principles both need to be equally activated for the sake of human evolution. We have forgotten this vital truth.

The law of Cause and Effect: We mercilessly strip Earth of her essential resources. We’ve polluted the water we need for life itself. We pour chemicals into our soil and belch our noxious fumes from industry and transportation.

That we’re still in denial about our impact on our planet is absolutely mind-boggling. What about future generations? Nature restores and supports, it never depletes itself.

We have gone sadly astray. Forgive our human ignorance dear Earth.

The law of Relativity: This law governs our individual perception of reality. It provides a platform for comparison. I traveled the globe widely and on occasion lived without nearby, potable water. Many populations in our world endure this and have to hand carry water to their abode as I did.

I could return to a land with all amenities in place but I never forgot what others are experiencing on a daily basis. We have abused our water and are now looking at water wars in the near future. Water will become gold. Who cares about the value of glitter if you are perishing from thirst?

These are the laws I have followed since the day I could walk out the front door. I had no idea of their existence as a wee one, but I could feel every one of them.

We are not our minds. We are our hearts which include our minds. That’s what Nature is to me, an exchange of hearts.

I recently practised yoga and listened to videos from Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher familiar to many. His first awakening occurred in Nature, sitting on a park bench in a city. It took him by surprise as did some of his other epiphanies, also streaming through the natural world.
