Why Millionaires Won’t Give You a Cent
Seeing the value of smaller things
Do you overlook the smaller things in life? Read this story.
A friend of mine, Femi, started a business and wanted investors. He was introduced to a successful business man from church. After a couple of formal meetings, the man invited my friend out for dinner. The following conversation took place.
‘Femi,’ the man said, ‘you want me to invest in your business?’
‘Yes,’ Femi replied, ‘I know you are a millionaire and that you invest in fledging businesses, I believe my business idea is a perfect fit for you.’ Here is my business plan. He pushed a neatly organised spiral-bound document across the table.
‘I’ll look through your business plan, but first I want you to tell me why I should give you a cent of my money, not a hundred dollars, or even a thousand. Why should I give you one cent?’
Femi looked puzzled. A cent should be easy for anyone to give away.
The man saw his puzzlement and explained. ‘You call me a millionaire because you believe I have one million dollars in my account?’ Femi nodded as the man continued. ‘Yes, I have one million dollars in my bank right now, but imagine I gave you a cent of that money, what would I have?’
‘$999,999.99 dollars,’ Femi replied instantly, still not getting it.
‘Well then,’ said the man, ‘would I still be a millionaire?’
Femi leaned back, he got it. ‘No sir, you will no longer be a millionaire.’
‘And that, my friend,’ the man said, ‘is the value of a cent.’
In life and in business, it’s the little things that make all the difference
Look after your tiny life moments and the big themes of life will take care of themselves
We concern ourselves with the big themes of life. Our careers, our children, relationships, hobbies, personal growth. This is important. But we do this while neglecting the present.
The day is right in front of us. The second is given to us now.
Instead we are consumed and overwhelmed by a future that is not promised to us. Tomorrow is not a guarantee. Not even the next hour is guaranteed. As we pay attention to the bigger themes of life; remember, without the tiny moments, you’ll never have a life.
