I got rejected many times. One medium publication rejected me 7 times in a line. I am making a record of rejections.
If medium publication rejecting me, then is it means that my work is not good? I don’t think so. Quality is a vague thing. You can’t sell leafy vegetables in the fish market.

There are three publications on Medium
Type I
This Medium Publication is elite publications.
- These publications have a large following
- They are very typical of their publishing frequency
- Their quality parameters are overrated
- They have closed door for new and learning writers
You can call these publications as a brand. They gain large attention from the reader. If you publish your story in them, the greater chance you will be get curated.
They have more authority over the platform. Algorithms favour them. I see my home menu fill with this publication even though I follow about 235 publications.
Why these publications reject your work
Evey good and prolific writer on medium tries to post their work in this elite medium publication. They got at least 1000 submissions per week. They have more stories to reject.
They publish 10 to 12 articles per day. 100 Stories enough for them in one week. They reject the other 900. The editor has its own perspective. Top writers got published easily in these publications.
How good is your story if the editor has a target to reject 90% then you have a greater chance to reject you than top writers?
Advantage of submitting stories in these publications

- Your story gets more reading time and you will earn more per story.
The disadvantage of submitting stories in big publications
- Your story will get rejected more often
- You will get rejection note after 14 days
- you can lose your confidence
If you have quality work. Readers will find you. Quality stands in markets. You need more patience and show up on medium daily.
Type II
These publications are like charity. They have a large following like Type I publications. But have inferior quality parameter than type I. They accept everyone. They publish your story within 30 minutes.
They look only for grammar and minimum word count in your article. If you submit your work, it will get published 100%
They publish 100 articles daily. They are very kind. Many newbies writers posts here.
In this publication, you get very less exposure, and your article vanishes in the mob.
Advantage of publishing Type II publications
- Your work will get published easily
- They are 0.00007% rejection ratio
Disadvantages
- Your story will not get distributed for long in Medium feeds
- They accept all stories so your story will not stand even if you have quality work
- You can’t able to gain followers.
Publish if you have an average story. Try Type I than type II if your story is excellent.
Type III
These Publications are niche-specific and have followers between range 5k to 50k.
They get little submissions, but they have good reader engagement. If you have quality work, then they will approve of it. They have a balance between quality and quantity.
Advantage of publishing in Type III publications
- Your work will get accepted
- It has a good chance of getting curated
- Because of high reader engagement, your story will get more reader
- You feel motivated by publishing in these publications.
Which publication is good for you
It depends on how often you write and how many readers follow you.
If you write a quality story, then I always recommend trying to type 1 and type 3 publications. You will get more exposure.
Type two publications are for those who write more often or for a new writer who has just started writing.
If you write at least 20 stories in one month, then you can publish the best 10 in type 1 and type 3. You can start your own publication or put remaining it in type 2 publications.
Publication strategy for medium writers
When you did with your story if you think it has quality and engagement then at first go for type 1 publication and if they reject your story. Submit it to type 3 publication will publish it.
It is like a win-win situation.
Never hurry in publishing story in ordinary publications. It will hamper your overall growth on medium.
Write many stories, be a prolific writer, but be selective with publications.

It depends on your writing topic. If you write on a different topic, then it will not help you. If you write on a single topic, then start a new publication it will take time. It will give you more exposure and followers than any publication.
Always remember 5000 followers with different internet are unused up than 1000 followers in the same interest. If the reader follows you and your publication, then higher are chances that medium will show them your work.
It worked for me. You can try it out.
