Why Medium is the Smartest Social Media Platform

The written word may not be dead, but it is certainly closer to the dodo bird than the woodpecker. The success — and current state — of popular social media platforms easily demonstrates this.
- Instagram is primarily pretty pictures, of curated (and often fake) lives.
- TikTok is short videos of goofy, ranty, or dancing people. And heavily censored by content monitors.
- Facebook is mainly pictures of people’s kids/pets, people arguing, memories (from posts from years ago), rants, memes and the like — and lately the same short videos as TikTok.
- And Twitter…sheesh — that imploded quickly over the last few months. It is the one most focused on the written word…albeit in truncated snippets.
What is Medium.com? Medium is the Smartest Social Networking Platform
If you came here from an external link, allow me to convince you to give it a shot.
1. The Written Word is Alive and Thriving Medium is all about the written word; uncensored, with thoughtful information. The content runs the gambit from news to self-improvement advice to gardening to spicy content to humor pieces. What you write about on here is how you find your tribe of like-minded people to share your ideas with.
2. No Ads Medium opted for a pay-to-play model to ensure the platform remains ad-free. The price? Conveniently, less than one fancy Starbucks coffee.
However, if you spend your time writing, chilling out in Starbucks sipping Caramel Macchiatos it will become a slightly more expensive hobby. Albeit that does sound like a lovely way to spend your evening. Or to start your morning, if you’re one of those early risers (which my vampire-inspired sleep schedule strictly prohibits).
3. You Can Make Money Important to note the word ‘can’. There are people on here who are primarily readers — and that is awesome. But, for many of us, we like to turn our experiences and advice into content. For that, Medium pays us when others read it. This is pretty awesome.
For many on here, it is simply enough to make back your $5 and a little more. But I am still flabbergasted that there are people who make thousands of dollars a month. That — is also pretty awesome.

You also make a little money via anyone who signs up via your link. What I like about this is what it rewards people who love the platform and want others to join. It costs nothing to the person signing up — which is the right way to do it. But it gives the person who brought them here a little bonus. And since you’re the reason they are joining us here on Medium, I feel this is fair.
Here is my link (in case you aren’t part of the Medium family yet):
4. A Whole New Tribe — with a Better Attention Span Facebook friend circles tend to remain quite small. For most it’s cousins you rarely actually talk to, ‘friends’ that you don’t know why you’re friends with, those random high-school friends you ‘reconnected with’, and a few randos.
Medium however is closer to Twitter. Your followers, or tribe, are primarily randos that you find informative or rib-tickling. But the content is more thorough. Personally, I like reading a few hundred words rather than a couple of hundred characters. As do most of my Medium mates (otherwise you probably wouldn’t be here).
5. Analytics and Audience Interaction Tools If you’re here to make money, analytics are how to figure out how to make more. AKA, write what your followers are craving. But for the rest of us, it is just fun to see how many people are reading your content.
You can see:
- How many people clicked on it.
- How many people read it.
- How long the average person spent reading it.
- How many ‘clapped’ for it (meaning they liked it).
- What people highlighted (so what sentences really resonated with them and they want others to pay attention to).
- Comments on your post, about what people liked, thanks for writing the piece, their own personal experiences on that topic, and more.
For me, it is really interesting to see how many people liked what you wrote, the experiences they share with you, their thoughts, ideas, and counterpoints (and it always seems to be done in a friendly way).
Medium is the Best Social Network (in my opinion at least)
The written word is thriving here, and personally I think the world needs more of it. Here on Medium you can follow all the topics that interest you most and discover amazing people to follow, and receive amazing followers who enjoy your thoughts, lessons and experiences.
Again, if you’re not part of Medium yet — and think the written-word community is wondrous — join us!
