Summary

Joe Biden is under pressure to select his Vice Presidential running mate promptly to quell infighting among his supporters and avoid providing ammunition to Trump.

Abstract

The article titled "Why Joe Biden Needs to Pick his VP Now?" discusses the urgency for Joe Biden to announce his Vice Presidential choice. The delay in decision-making has led to resentment and a competitive atmosphere among four potential female candidates, causing disunity and negative optics that could benefit President Trump. The article emphasizes that the focus should be on strategizing for the 2020 election rather than internal conflicts. It also touches on the expectations of black voters, the dynamics between Biden and his potential running mates, including Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams, Amy Klobuchar, and Elizabeth Warren, and the need for Biden to take a decisive stance in line with his conscience.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that Biden's handling of the VP selection process has turned it into a spectacle, detracting from more pressing political issues.
  • It criticizes the negative discourse among Democrats, which is seen as counterproductive to the party's goals.
  • The author believes that the attacks on the female candidates for the VP position are shocking and provide Trump with potential material for future debates.
  • The article points out that Biden's assumption that African American voters will support him without question, especially after his controversial comments, is misguided.
  • It indicates that Kamala Harris's endorsement of Biden and her supporters' enthusiasm were beneficial to his campaign, though there is now a perception of distancing.
  • Stacey Abrams is portrayed as representing the voters who were crucial for Biden's success, but she faces criticism for being perceived as too assertive.
  • Amy Klobuchar is presented as a pragmatic choice for VP, appealing to Midwestern voters and bringing a no-drama approach to politics.
  • Elizabeth Warren is seen as a potential bridge to Progressives and is acknowledged for her resilience, but she is also viewed as a contentious figure who could attract negative attention from Republicans and Sanders supporters.
  • The author concludes that Biden should announce his VP choice swiftly to end the internal strife and prevent further sexist smears and outrageous comments.

Why Joe Biden Needs to Pick his VP Now?

His failure to do so create resentment among his supporters and makes four women compete for his attention

Yesterday Amy Klobuchar was asked to undergo vetting to be Biden’s running partner. The news was widely commented by supporters of other contenders who threw insults at each other all over social media.

Joe Biden seems to turn the VP nomination into a game which only adds drama to the political discourse.

At this point in time, Democrats should be focused on setting up a strategy to win in 2020 rather than fight among themselves.

When Biden declared that he would choose a woman as his running partner, he opened the gate for arguments even if he thought the announcement would create unity and give strength to the party.

Unfortunately, the shocking attacks directed at the women who put themselves forward, give Trump ammunition to use in future debates.

It is indeed bad optics to see a man being courted by intelligent women.

He should get inspiration from Martin Luther King jr who stated “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right”.

Joe Biden should do what is right and announce the name of his VP in order to stop the negativity.

The bones of contention are the following:

The ethnicity of Biden’s VP

During the primary, Joe Biden was out of the ring until South Carolina. Black voters gave him a resounding win, then assumed that a Black woman would be picked as VP. Sadly, Team Biden seems to pour cold water on this idea.

Biden just assumes that African Americans will automatically vote for him. The fact that he thinks it is appropriate to declare: “You ain’t black if you vote for Trump” is disappointing and shameful.

Those comments were just uttered (while writing this article) in “The Breakfast Club” and will surely push more people away from the Democratic party.

Kamala Harris

Harris endorsed Biden when the race was only between him and Bernie Sanders.

Joe Biden realised he needed to inject some much needed enthusiasm in his campaign to counter the Bernie Bros.

The Khive, Kamala Harris’s online fans gave some street credibility to Biden even though he now seems to distance himself from them due to the perceived idea they are too divisive and rude.

Her critics are adamant that she should not become VP as she had to drop out of the primary race in December.

The unsavoury attacks Harris faced during her campaign have renewed now that she is treated as a serious contender.

Stacey Abrams

Her supporters claim she represents the voters who put Biden in the driving seat. Her detractors believe she is not qualified and is viewed as too pushy.

It is important to emphasise that she would not put herself in the spotlight without the tacit approval of Team Biden.

The fact that her fiercest critics come from the Khive is disheartening as minorities should be united and not demean each other in the public sphere

Amy Klobuchar

Choosing her as VP makes a lot of sense even though she is “not cool”. Klobuchar is a realistic politician who appeals to the Midwest voters.

She gets the job done with no drama and did manage to win a lot of Delegates in the primary race.

Elizabeth Warren

Her supporters claim she will help Biden win over Progressives and has a fighting spirit. Warren always seem to come back from political oblivion however, she is an easy target for Republicans as well as Sanders supporters who still feel betrayed by her.

In Conclusion

In order to end these fights and save the people from hearing sexists and outrageous smears, Joe Biden should pick his VP as soon as possible.
