Summary

The web content discusses the societal pressure to conform and the importance of self-acceptance and personal growth.

Abstract

The article delves into the human tendency to emulate others, often at the expense of one's unique identity. It cites Oscar Wilde's observation that people frequently adopt others' thoughts and lives, leading to a homogenized existence where individuality is sacrificed for popular ideals and trends. The author acknowledges the natural inclination to admire and aspire to be like role models but warns against the loss of self that occurs when imitation replaces inspiration. The piece emphasizes the value of self-improvement while maintaining one's distinct character and encourages readers to embrace their true selves, work towards personal goals, and find happiness in authenticity.

Opinions

  • People often abandon their unique qualities to mimic popular figures or societal norms, which can erode their individuality.
  • While having role models is positive, it's crucial to differentiate between admiration and envy to avoid losing one's own identity.
  • Self-love and striving to be a better version of oneself are more fulfilling than trying to become someone else.
  • Success should not be measured by the ability to imitate others but by personal development and the pursuit of one's own goals.
  • Social media and the consumption of others' lives can be a distraction from actively working towards one's own aspirations.
  • True contentment comes from self-acceptance and taking proactive steps to live the life one desires.

Why is it that people always want to be someone they are not?

Oscar Wilde said: “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”

People who are born unique and have a different style of thought converge into a set of well popular ideas and fashion. The purpose of a new life is completely shattered when everyone out in the society is trying to be the same old Bank Clerk, or the Central Government employee or a film star.

I do believe that there will always be a desire to be someone who we like, someone because of whom we get inspired or someone who’s well established within our field. That is unstoppable and isn’t a bad thing either. But the problem arises when the urge to imitate people drives the person in such a manner that the unique self of a person is lost and only the footprints of the celebrity followed is exhibited and nothing of the original character exists anymore.

People always want to be something they are not. They just don’t want to be themselves because being yourself is not cool and being someone that you don’t even know personally is considered swag.

Why am I not tall like him? How can i get fairer than her? When can I buy the house that he owns? What does he eat to be able to be the macho he is?

Why can’t it be this way?

I am short that doesn’t mean I can’t outplay him on the field. I am dark but I sit in an office working daily for my family. I need to save effectively to provide a bright future to my children rather than buying that new house. I can eat whatever I want and whenever I want, I just need to make sure that I be fit no matter what I eat.

If these are qualities, habits or hobbies you admire in another, that’s fine! You can develop them as long as you take an interest to improve and grow yourself but please, don’t try to imitate others. There’s a difference between having a role model and being envious of other’s life. Treat them like a role model, learn from their mistakes and develop yourself.

People should start working on loving themselves more. You are who you are and if you think you need a change in yourself then you can do it, but that doesn’t mean you have to be someone else, you just have to strive to be an improved version of yourself. This makes people happy and allows them to live in peace with themselves and the world.

If you want to be as successful as the others, there’s no need to do something about it. It’s easier to read about other people’s great lives and to follow them on Twitter and Facebook, it requires no effort watch movies that momentarily make you forget your life.

To live the life you want you need to take action, and you need to follow your goals.
