Why Is December So Beautiful, Yet Ugly & Mean?
What an amazing contradiction
Take it or not, December is the most wonderful time of the year. It comes with glamour, glitz, and lots of razzmatazz.
Imagine the goodwill and love in the air every December. Lots of smiles and friendliness abound.
December captivates, mesmerize, and amazes us with a unique beauty that cannot be compared with other months.
Every one is expectant of its coming, every year.
Surely, there is something magically enthralling about December. There is a special grace, glory, and attention lavished in December.
December is like the most beautiful girl in the world radiating in grandeur on her coronation day, gaining the undivided loyalty of millions of admirers all over the world.
Adults grew up with indelible memories of December, the new clothes and shoes, gifts, vacations, visits, and multiple trips to see “Father Christmas” returning home with nice gifts.
What about the “special food” for Christmas day?
Special games and sports activities cannot be forgotten. Then comes the goodbyes, till we meet again.
December brings family members together, recreates bonds, and fosters friendships.
But why all the fuss? After all, December is just another month.
Expectations, Demands & Depression
In December, we all expect to get a gift from our loved ones, however small. In return, we also go above and beyond to reciprocate.
Yet, most times we end up forgetting that cousin and that creates bad blood. Many have come to develop an entitlement mentality that erodes the goodwill of the giver.
Many are so demanding, so much, that giving becomes an unbearable burden. These unmet expectations and lack of gratitude ultimately result in depression to those concerned.
The Stress & Stretch
Men will paint the house and mow the lawn while women worry about shopping for gifts, food, visitors, and house cleaning etc.
Many people obtain loans and some falsify documents to get the extra money to satisfy their taste in December.
Also, December comes with a high crime rate because some people prefer to spend big though they lack the means, they would rather rob and steal to put up a show.
When the year comes to an end and December turns into January, then there are casualties.
The Rollercoaster Effect
Here we are in January, the reality is setting in, no more cash to throw around, the smiles have turned to frowns, the glitz, glamour, and colors are fading. No more loud music on the streets.
Slowly, the dreams are turning into reality once again. And of course, we are returning items bought in December to stores for refunds.
The Aftermath
Various homes are full of unopened packages and gift boxes. The omicron virus is spreading faster than ever. Increasing numbers of hospitalization.
Many are now struggling to make ends meet because of bad judgment and reckless spending in December.
Some are mean because they did not get the attention they loudly craved in December.
My Takeaways
December is not to blame. Our attitude and actions should be blamed.
The best we can do is to set the right priorities.
Get finances in order, pay up debts and be diligent.
Above everything else, learn some lessons in moderation.
When December comes around again, adopt a measure of sanity to shield yourself of its allure and magnetism. Period.
