Why I’m Thankful
2020 has brought a November to Remember
Traditionally on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I take time out of my day to personally handwrite thank-you notes to those who have impacted my life in the year. Then, I put them in an envelope and would hand-deliver them to each person when possible.
On Thursday (Thanksgiving Day), I would typically spend time with friends & family and express gratitude in our dinners. After all, it’s time to be full of gratitude.
This year, as you know, has been very different for everyone. We are in the middle of a one-in-every-hundred-year event (COVID Pandemic), which has forced many of us to change and adjust the yearly traditions a little bit.
I still hand-wrote messages, but instead of hand-delivering or mailing them, I scanned them along with their envelope and sent them to each person as an attachment via e-mail (and text-message).
I found it a satisfying middle-ground of the tradition and a proper adjustment for the current moment. The handwriting was still a gratifying exercise, and it continues to add a personal touch for the recipients of the notes.
This process inspired me to do a little more. I decided to write about everything that I’m thankful for and share it broadly.
Here’s my inaugural gratitude list.
In 2020 I’m Thankful for:
- My Wife. You have shown immense resilience in this extremely challenging year. Your perseverance and dedication to excellence are awe-inspiring.
- My Parents. My strongest supporters who always have time to find ways to help my family. You also raised me always to see the bigger picture and consider our fortunate circumstances.
- Family. You have been there when needed the most and providing a positive outlook.
- My Son. Who every day brings a smile to my face that words can’t describe. Every day I see him, I instantly feel lifted on a cloud and get an immense sense of joy.
- My Health. This year has added a great sense of perspective about how lucky I’m to be healthy and to be able to support others.
- My Colleagues. You have made the team feel like family, and together we have accomplished an incredible amount of success. Considering the current environment, our accomplishments are exciting.
- Friends. For being there to support me through all the circumstances.
- Patience. Without it, every day would be more challenging.
- Sports. You have provided moments to escape the repetitive day-to-day, learn from the player’s leadership, and grow professionally.
- Free Time. Grateful to have the opportunity to take a break, breathe, think, and re-focus every day.
- Health Care Professionals. Your sacrifice and commitment during this time have been tremendous, and please know that the entire world thanks you!
- Essential Workers. You allowed many of us to have as close a sense of normalcy as possible in our lives.
- Technology. For providing the ability to connect with others and make life easier.
- Challenges. For making me more resilient and learning important lessons to improve myself.
Thank you for reading!
I hope this encourages others to make their own gratitude list and share it.
