Summary

The author prefers to write and read concise articles, choosing to publish with "Short. Sweet. Valuable." to align with this preference.

Abstract

The author expresses a personal inclination towards brevity in writing and reading, favoring articles that can be consumed in under four minutes on Medium. This preference stems from a belief that most ideas, including their own, can be effectively communicated in a concise manner. Despite the commonality of longer articles as a means of self-expression, the author commits to writing daily but restricts their articles to under 300 words. This decision is influenced by their cognitive style, which is characterized by thinking in short bursts, a factor they attribute to their daily medication for anxiety and depression. The author finds that their mode of expression is more suited to writing than speaking. Additionally, the author has sometimes written on topics of lesser interest to meet the length expectations of typical Medium articles. By contributing to a publication geared towards shorter pieces, the author intends to focus on topics of genuine interest and respect the reader's time by sharing insights more succinctly.

Opinions

  • The author believes that most topics can be discussed effectively in a concise manner, negating the need for long articles.
  • Longer articles are acknowledged as a form of self-expression for many, but the author personally prefers to keep their daily writing under 300 words.
  • The author's preference for brevity is partly due to their medication, which they feel affects their reaction time and favors shorter, written expressions over longer spoken ones.
  • The author has previously felt compelled to write on less interesting topics to fit the typical Medium article length, which they find unnecessary with the new publication "Short. Sweet. Valuable."
  • The author values the reader's time and aims to share meaningful content without consuming excessive amounts of the reader's day.

Why I’m Committing to Publishing Many of My Articles with Short. Sweet. Valuable.

I struggle with long articles. To me, long articles consist of anything longer than a four-minute read on Medium. I feel that anything I have to say, and much of what I read, can be said in far fewer words.

Some reading this may be scoffing at that last statement. I get it. I know that many people write on Medium as a form of self-expression, which often takes longer than a four-minute read to put into words. I, too, write a Medium article every day to release my feelings. I just need to do it in under 300 words, which makes Short. Sweet. Valuable perfect for me.

The reason I write in short bursts is that I think in short bursts. I take a handful of medications every day to treat anxiety and depression, and I know this slows my reaction time. I express myself much better through the written word than through speaking.

I’ve also found myself occasionally writing about topics on Medium that I’m really not all that interested in, only because they lend themselves to 4–6 minute reads. With a publication that is meant for shorter discourses, I can stick to what I really want to write about.

I hope you’ll enjoy the articles I write for this new publication. I’m looking forward to sharing more of myself with you; I’ll just take less of your day, and mine, to do it.
