Why I’m a Woman who always SMILES (for myself)

All my equally progressive girlfriends complain non-stop about MEN pressuring us to always smile in public. They even put on dystopic frowns just to annoy men (LOL). But for Women’s History Month I’d like to say something about the real power and importance of smiling for one’s self.

The acclaimed Sudanese novelist Kola Boof says that “smiling is the magic wand we’re born with.” She literally considers smiling to be a form of magic — a simple act that automatically ‘conjures magic.’

Her take is that all humans can instantly change the energy and karma around us simply by smiling, which in her opinion (and mines, too), automatically acts as an antennae to draw positive and shiny frequencies to ourselves. She points out that even Science supports this with data showing that smiling is magnetic and infuses us with hope and confidence that translates into…power.

I didn’t always think that way. For years, I was so harrassed by strange men just walking down the street — men who would say ‘Show me that pretty smile’ or ‘look at the legs on you, why don’t you smile for me?’ — that I came to treasure not smiling as an act of rebellion. But sadly when we don’t smile (like hardly ever), our faces and body language take on a flattened edge that can create something in the universe that is the opposite of magic and magnetism — something toxic that puts out negative frequencies and causes us to attract and experience —bad luck outcomes and a cycle of poisonous vibes bouncing and receiving until we’re literally wrapped up in darkness.

You see many people like this — they’re always frowning. Everything is always going wrong for them. They aren’t attracting and manifesting the healthy ultra-empowering energy and karma they need because that’s not what they’re putting out.

When I was nineteen, I had a suicide attempt. So now, in retrospect, I think that I was one of those people who drew the wrong energy to myself because I went through years in late teen-hood never smiling. You can read my article detailing my suicide attempt here: link. But what I realized once I came back to this life — is that the act of smiling really is a rewarding magical wand when I smile for one person only — myself.

I believe as humans, we have a need to regenerate our mental health and our emotional well being by nurturing it with lots of smiles and laughter.

Sometimes when I’m not too busy, I just turn on a comedy special featuring Amy Schumer or Chris Rock on cable so that I can laugh my ass off. It’s so healing! It’s so medicinal! And it’s so free!

It doesn’t cost us anything to laugh. And I have come to believe that laughter and smiling is the greatest sign of God’s presence — if you’re one who believes in angels, it beckons those angels to come and stand with us, to be near us. The act of smiling for one’s self is so beyond men whistling at us on the street. It’s so beyond the pressures of our jobs and trying to cultivate and maintain relationships with people both at home and at work for ‘networking’ purposes. All the superficial reasons to smile.

Smiling for ourselves is about none of that stuff.

What a smile truly does….is symbolizes our awareness that we’re in this struggle, we’ve accepted the challenges around us and we are busy pollenating positivity, love and gratitude as we use that magic wand to bring the desires of our hearts…closer and closer. The good karma that we all want and deserve.

Thank you so much for reading this. I’m smiling at you right now!
