Why I’m a Fan of Tom Brady

Written by someone who doesn’t like football

Tu Trinh in Unsplash

I don’t understand all that much about football and never really had a desire to learn. But one of the players has caught my eye — Tom Brady.

Why? Yes, he is good looking — but what has captured my attention and respect is that he appears to be ageless.

At 43, which many would consider being young, except in the world of sports, Brady has just won his 7th Super Bowl. This is after playing for 21 seasons and he looks to continue on — at least a few more years.

He’s had 10 Super Bowl appearances and 5 Super Bowl MVPs. Even I can understand how amazing that is!

How does he do it?! Has he just been gifted? Has he been blessed? Is it in his genes?

While I will admit that to accomplish what he has means he has major talent and grace surrounding him, he also treats his body like a temple.

He’s taking extremely great care of himself. Something most Americans are not doing, don’t want to, and/or don’t even know that they can.

Too many Americans partake in the Standard American Diet, which acronym is “SAD” and indeed it is. I used to be a part of that diet until my eyes were opened to something more.

Do you want a chance at better health? And have your body run at optimal levels? To not fall apart or feel that getting old sucks. To be vibrant and healthy and to realize that you have more control over your body, health and wellness than you were ever told?

Food IS medicine. Genes are just blueprints and not our destiny. Our lifestyle and environment and at a deeper level, our perceived environment, is the factor in conditions and dis ease that comes into our body.

Not knowing much about Tom, I have been doing some research and finding it difficult to learn what he practices. While I understand the importance of all his stats, how his body is functioning is equally if not even more important (at least to me).

He is well known and could really shine a light on the importance of using food as fuel. But the media doesn’t want to write about that and educate us by his example.

And that is also “SAD” — as in the emotion.

The first time Tom Brady was brought to my attention was a few years ago on some morning show. He was being interviewed regarding how he can do what he does at his age…

…what he shared so resonated with me and much was what I do as well. I was thrilled to hear someone of his caliber share these ‘secrets’ as I hoped it would open some minds to a healthier way to live.

Tom hasn’t interviewed life, it was a prerecorded segment. When it ended the camera went back to the hosts who were chuckling and one stated how he should really enjoy a nice cheeseburger!

I felt the point of the whole interview was missed — and I wondered how many laughed and agreed….

… And then complained about needing to lose weight, their aches and pains, how they can’t remember like they used to, the meds they are on and conditions that led to it — and how they hated getting old.

I did find in Wikipedia how Brady practices transcendental meditation, yoga, goes to bed early and does neuroplasticity training (which means the brain is not hardwired and can rewire).

He also adheres to a ‘controversial strict diet’ and mentioned the site called “TB12 Method.” I looked it up and one of the things the site states:

“Peak performance is the result of every decision you make.”

Ain’t that the truth!

And gives a grocery list upon entering an email address. To give you a peek at the categories:

Fish, Meat and Poultry — choose organic, grass-fed. Fish choose wild-caught

Fruits and Vegetables — choose organic

Fresh Herbs, Canned/Jarred Foods/Nuts and Seeds — list of each section

Bread/Wraps — gluten-free

Noodles, Grains, Packaged Foods/Flour, Baking — no wheat or gluten

Oils — no mention of veggie or canola oil

Condiments/Milk and Cream — no mayo, ketchup or BBQ and dairy-free milk alternatives

Drinks — soda is out and coffee is organic

And there is more including a list of what to avoid. Though I don’t follow everything, it’s a nice list if someone wanted to know where to start.

There was a time that I would have thought this was a ‘controversial strict diet’ but no longer. At that time, I was 40 lbs heavier, sick a lot and fatigued.

Now I see eating this way not as restrictive but as freedom — as I feel so much better! And that all said, I do have the occasional burgers, pizza etc.

And when I do, it’s not about cheating or treating — I take the judgement out. That way I have the control over the food and my emotions — not the oh so common another way around.

I’m in no way endorsing this company that Tom is affiliated with or encouraging you to follow. I know little to nothing about them.

I am advocating eating whole, real, organic as much as possible food choices. And staying away from processed, fast food, gluten and dairy choices that may taste good, but aren’t good for the body — or brain.

Helping ourselves through tools like meditation and yoga and getting adequate sleep. That gives our bodies a chance to heal and our brains a chance to cleanse.

So many of us push ourselves — we need to take care of ourselves.

And I’m excited to share one example of a peak performer who is doing just that. And reaping the benefits for all to see.

How about you?

What are your thoughts on eating, aging and living a life that’s rich and full? Does what I shared here feel restrictive or do you see the freedom?

As we are in session 2 of my 5-week course — I shared how to take control of our bodies — and how food is medicine. We have more control than we think!

I look to bring some light to subjects that seem to be kept in the dark.
