Why I Write At Dawn

The sunrise is my muse

Every morning, I wake up at 4am. Sometimes earlier. Summer is on its way on the Gold Coast, Australia, and the first rays of sunlight sneak through the window at 4.30am. The wildlife starts its daily concert: magpies and lorikeets gather outside to let the world know it’s the beginning of a new day, a new sun. It’s time to live.

I make myself a coffee and sit in the terrace embracing the smell of a fresh start. There are no lights outside; it’s still dark and the dark is still. The neighbours are sleeping and this moment is mine and mine only. I don’t want to share my muse with anyone.

Then I grab my laptop and start writing. Some days the words flow, others I have to chase them, and at times there are no words to be found at all, just flashes of ideas, illusions of thoughts.

Just like the sunrise, writing starts with a dark landscape, a couple of sounds breaking the silence, a few birds singing…and suddenly we start to see the first light in the horizon: ideas get wrapped in gowns and words, the chaos becomes symphony, the sun rises and a story is born.
