Why I Started Prioritizing Rest and Recovery
And how that’s changed my outlook on life
In my teens, I carried an idealistic mindset that the harder you hustle, the more you’ll achieve in life. Mark Cuban preaches that the key to winning in business is to work 24 by 7 by 52. In other words, every minute of every year. Many of us have chosen to accept this self-imposed idea that we should grind until we become zombies.
I would catch myself sleeping 3 hours a night, sometimes pulling an all-nighter, skipping meals, and always making excuses to not workouts. Every other week, I’d burnout without understanding why I felt so exhausted. That’s why one of the greatest breakthroughs I’ve made this year is to take care of my well-being first.
No matter what you want in life, there is always a smarter way to get there. Perhaps you’re an entrepreneur trying to get your business off the ground, a student cramming for that final exam next week, or maybe you’re currently balancing 10 things at once. Work on your time management skills so you can take weekends off and sleep 8 hours a night.
Change Your Mindset
After countless cups of coffee and black tea, eating takeout way too many times, and feeling miserable throughout the day, I hit a brick wall. My quality of output was decreasing by the day. I had to ask myself whether all these sacrifices were worth it. Why did I choose to sacrifice my health and well-being to achieve success in the first place?
It was all in my mind. I was so obsessed with getting to the next destination, the next pivotal stage of my life, I didn’t take time to enjoy the process.
Through it all, I learned that I would rather achieve success slower to not compromise on my health.
I don’t know how old you are right now, but it’s likely you still have a whole life ahead of you. If you’re in your 20’s like me, we’ve only lived about 1/4 or so of our entire life. You have no clue how your current bad habits will affect your health in the future.
Remind yourself that it’s not about how early you wake up or how late you sleep. What matters is what you do during your waking hours. Being ‘busy’ doesn’t mean that you’re doing productive work. It’s important to reframe your mindset.
Take Action
Now that you understand why rest and recovery matters to me, I’d like to share the steps I took to change my lifestyle.
- Sleep a full 8 hours
- Journal every morning and night
- Workout 3+ times a week
- Take the weekends or one day of the week off
- Quit caffeine, you don’t need it
- Do at least one thing you love every week
- Spend quality time with family and friends
- Eat healthy foods
- Take short breaks between work sessions
- Reflect on your day — what went well and what can you improve
The Main Takeaway
Prioritizing rest and recovery has changed my outlook on life. It’s taught me to reconsider my values. Perhaps my story spoke to you, perhaps it didn’t. Regardless, I challenge you to identify and write down your values. What aspects of your life do you consider non negotiable? It could be time with family, fitness, financial security, or any combination of values that are meaningful to you. Allow your values to guide your life.
Never sacrifice your values in pursuit of success.
