Writing on Medim
Why I Roll My Eyes at Writing Advice?
So, here’s the deal: I dismiss 93% of writing advice.
Yeah, that’s a precise number, and I’m sticking to it.
Why?
Because writing advice often feels like a recipe for a dish I didn’t order.
1. One Size Fits None
Let’s face it, writing isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation.
What works for Shakespeare might not work for me.
I don’t need advice that sounds like it was engraved on a stone tablet.
I need tips that get my creative juices flowing, not rules that make me feel like I’m failing at “writing 101.”
2. Rules are Made to be Broken
Have you ever heard of the phrase “rules are meant to be broken”?
Well, that’s my writing mantra.
Sometimes, the best stories come from tearing up the rulebook and dancing on its shredded pages.
So, when someone hands me a list of “10 Commandments of Writing,” I chuckle and toss it in the metaphorical trash can.
3. My Muse is a Rebel
My muse is a rebellious spirit.
It hates routine and despises writing advice that tries to put it in a box.
The moment you tell me to write at the same time every day or stick to a rigid outline, my muse flips a metaphorical middle finger and takes a vacation.
I’m not about to chain my creativity to someone else’s idea of discipline.
Look, writing advice isn’t all bad.
I’ll admit, the remaining 7% has some nuggets of wisdom.
But the other 93%?
Nah, thanks but no thanks.
I’ll be over here, breaking the rules, ignoring the naysayers, and letting my rebellious muse lead the way.
Cheers to writing on my terms!
