Why I Quit Burpees
Deciding What Works for Me, Changed My Workouts
There are a lot of mentalities when it comes to working out. The key is to finding the one that works for you. It is not a one size fits all. Not only do you need to find a type of exercise you like, you also have to find the mentality that works for you.
Some people like to push themselves to their limit and really beat themselves up. These are the kind of people who think throwing up during a workout is a good sign.
Some people like competitions and want to defeat the person next to them. Some people like to try things they struggle with to push themselves.
Others like to do the same exercises over and over to master them.
Some people like to be covered in sweat. Others go out of their way to avoid that.
Some people workout to soreness. If you can easily get down the stairs after leg day you’re a failure. Others like to pace themselves and be ready to work out again sooner.
I’m a chill, sweat lover, sore avoider, exercise repeater, endurance, kind of workout person. I like Marathons and Ballet Barre and I like workouts I can do in my living room. After years of experimenting I’ve really found what works for me and what I want to get out of working out.
I came up with a rule a while ago that is pretty simple — No Burpees. I hate them. I’m sure this comes as a shock to no-one, I believe they are the most hated exercise. I feel clunky and even though I can do them, I feel like I’m just flopping myself around. The modifications make me feel slow. They’re boring. They require more cardio strength than physical strength which is my weaker side. I just don’t enjoy doing them. So a few years ago I decided I just wouldn’t do them.
I do jumping jacks or mountain climbers instead and I’m so much happier. I don’t dread workouts. No rolling my eyes when I see that they’re up next. Do I lose some of the intended work the trainer planned for the workout? — sure. But the potential loss of benefits isn’t enough to make me want to do them. The benefit of enjoying my workout out weighs that by pounds and pounds.
What are your rules for working out?
