Why I Pay For Evernote
Evernote is one of the most popular and best note-taking apps on the market. Many people think that the free version is enough, and for most people, that may be true. Why I still pay for Evernote is explained in this article.
Evernote offers three rates. The base rate is free, the premium rate is €6.99 per month, and the business rate is €13.99.
I have the Premium rate.
What can the Premium fare do that the Basic fare cannot?
You should think that the basic tariff is sufficient because you can upload 60 MB of data per month. Even if you digitalize all the documents you have in your household, you will hardly ever use up this 60 megabyte per month, because a photo in JPEG format usually only has between 500 and 600 kilobytes.
PDF files and doc files have, depending on the size, between 40 and several hundred kilobytes.
Of course, most users will not only save documents and photos in Evernote but also create their own notes and manage appointments. These applications consume even less storage space.
With the basic rate, you can easily archive, index, and organize all your contracts, invoices, photos, manuals, and thousands of other documents.
However, the basic plan lacks two incredibly useful features.
1. forward emails to Evernote: Especially when you’re planning a project in Evernote, it’s essential to be able to manage not only notes and related documents, but also the associated mail traffic.
Starting with the Premium plan, you can forward all your email to your Evernote account. By using tags in the subject line, you can even specify which destination folder the email should end up in. So you don’t have to manually distribute the mails from the Evernote inbox to the individual folders later.
Of course, you can also immediately forward all documents photographed with your mobile phone to Evernote via email.
2. automatic text recognition: You can also search images and photos for text in the basic version, but this is not possible with PDFs and doc files. The former is very handy if you take pictures of signs you want to find later.
For example, I often photograph the opening hours of restaurants or doctors’ surgeries.
When I search for the restaurant or the doctor in Evernote later, I immediately see the sign I photographed.
Much more often, however, we look for information hidden somewhere in a document in everyday life.
Do you need your customer number at an insurance company? Then you can either read all your insurance documents and search for your customer number or, if you have Evernote’s premium rate, enter the name of your insurance company and the search term “customer number.”
Evernote Premium will not only display the document in which the information you want is hidden, but will also highlight that information inside the material.
The possibilities of this function are limitless. As an author, I can, for example, search all my manuscripts, which I also saved in Evernote, for a keyword.
I want to know in which volumes of my series the butler Felixv occurs? I search Evernote for the term “Felix” and see all the manuscripts in which he plays a role.
That’s pretty helpful for series because it gives me a quick overview of which characters have appeared in which books.
That’s just one example, of course, that maybe nobody is interested except me, but everyone will find their own personal, unique application for text recognition.
Conclusion
The Evernotes base rate hasn’t been enough for me for a long time. Since I can search all my documents within seconds, I don’t want to miss this feature anymore.
I don’t think the price of 6.99 € per month is too high, especially since I can deduct this issue from my business tax anyway.
