Why I love working from home
Some people only thrive in a team, but I hate teamwork. Here I explain why
I did an office job for thirteen years and was part of a big team. I wasn’t happy until I had my own office and a job for which I was solely responsible.
But one problem remained: I still had a boss. He could come to my office at any time and give me a task I didn’t like, and he could tell me in detail how to do my job.
It’s not that my boss didn’t know what he was doing. He was actually quite clever. But his style was different from mine.
While I preferred to write mails because I hate to talk on the phone, he wanted exactly the opposite: I should clarify as much as possible on the phone. My method worked very well — it just wasn’t his method.
I also didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t choose the software I had to work with. The company had specific licenses, and there was nothing more.
Even the browser was mandatory. I managed to use the browser I wanted anyway, but it wasn’t welcome.
But what bothered me the most was that I had to be in the office for exactly eight hours. It didn’t matter how fast or efficient I was or how much to do. Only the time recording system was important. There was no point in discussing it.
Today everything is different
Now I’m sitting at my desk at home, in front of my own laptop with just the software I want.
I set myself daily goals, work until I reach them, and then quit. Sometimes I sit in front of the computer from eight in the morning until six in the evening and on other days I have done everything I need by noon.
I set my own priorities, don’t have to answer to anyone, and I’m free to divide up my time.
It wasn’t always easy, and sometimes it still isn’t.
Of course, the transition from a working relationship to self-employment was not without problems.
If you suddenly have the whole day at your disposal, you tend to put things off. If nobody controls you, you allow yourself too many breaks, switch on the TV in between, or lie on the couch when you’re tired.
In the first weeks of my self-employment, I noticed that I wasn’t more productive than when I was writing next to my job.
Fortunately, I quickly realized where my problems were, and I tackled them. I started making day plans and checking off my tasks. Only when everything that was on my schedule was done was I allowed finishing work. Before there was no television, no Internet and no housework.
I never want to go back to the nine to five world again
For many people, being self-employed may be a frightening idea. Income is not guaranteed, and every day, you have to motivate yourself to do the work.
You cannot hide behind a team and hope that someone else will do the work.
But for me, it is a dream come true. On rainy days I work many hours, and when the weather is beautiful, I just stop early and enjoy the sun.
I don’t have to go by car or bus through the rush hour every morning anymore and don’t waste valuable time in traffic jams.
I sleep better, have more time for myself, do sports again, and even earn more money than before.
Sometimes I wonder why I had to live to be 45 to understand that. Today I can’t imagine ever working for a boss again. I am infinitely grateful to my readers for making this luxury possible for me.
