Why I love sunny weather and what to do not to get burnt

The last few days, in The Netherlands, we had very warm weather; between 25°C and 30°C. A few weeks ago we also had already high degrees!

Now the degrees are getting low again. Today we had some rain (good for the plants in my garden). Some people love it and some people hate it. I think I’m in between. Maybe I love it. No, actually, I know I love it. I know it for sure. Just my feeling.

I have been to the beach this year where I love the sun the most. I haven’t been there a few years ago for the last time when I was on holidays on one of the Dutch island Terschelling.

I enjoy the beach the most when I lay on it on my towel. Sometimes walking through the beach, feeling the white sand under my feet. Dry. It’s very soft. All the sand between your toes. Hearing the sea waving up and down, getting smaller when it's touching the land. Standing still, watching the sea to move over the land.

Smelling the salt water, feeling that salt water under my feet, moving backwards.

That’s what I love about the beach. Standing, sitting, lying on it. Thinking about really nothing, or thinking about what’s happening in my life. There I’ll get through my emotions. Some heavy, some peaceful. It helps me move through my life. Just like moving through the woods or nature.

What to do not to get burnt?

When getting into the sun, you also have to be aware of the sun coming into your skin. I’m aware of that too. It’s hard not to take sun cream with you because most of the people don’t take it with them in their bags.

There are so many products that are right for your skin. You have to test some for yourself. Every skin is different thus every skin needs its own protection, but also the right one.

You can do something before getting into the sun and save from hurting your own skin by being in the sun. I love to be in the sun, but also want precaution and not to get burnt. It takes years before you notice some skin cancer. Then you’ll be too late.

What you can do as a precaution and at the time the sun is shining:

Use some sun cream and cream it over your body every hour

  • Use water-resistant sun cream when you’re touching the water
  • Stay out of the sun between 12 am and 15 pm
  • Cover your neck with your hair (if you have long hair) or a light summer scarf (yes, boys and men too)
  • Wear a nice head you’re comfortable wearing it
  • When you wear tops, you could cover your arms with a light beach dress or wear a shirt with short arms
  • Drink lots of water
  • Snack lots of mini cucumber, paprika, tomatoes, or any other small fruit you can take with you
  • Women: wear skirts or maxi-dresses
