Why I Left a Senior Role and a Two-Decade Corporate Career for Blockchain and Web3, and I Don’t Regret It

As I approach my 40th birthday this week, I find myself reflecting on a significant decision that has shaped my life recently.

After nearly two decades in the corporate world and rising to a senior position, I stepped beyond the familiar and embraced the future. Leaving my stable job at a company that had become my second home, a job that rewarded me well, I chose to follow my passion for Blockchain and Web3 technologies.

This decision came as a surprise to many. Over the years, I became known as someone deeply committed to my work, who could be relied upon to execute tasks efficiently, and who cared about the people I worked with. But despite the outward success, I felt an inner restlessness growing. There was a calling that I felt compelled to follow.

The Journey

Over two decades in the corporate world, I had the privilege of working with some of the brightest minds in the wireless tech industry. I was not just a contributor, but also a learner, constantly absorbing new knowledge and skills. The value of putting ‘We’ before ‘I’ became a guiding principle for me as I successfully led teams, managed resources, and worked on diverse projects.

From building innovative products to mentoring teams, and showcasing our company’s solutions at global trade shows, each experience added a new dimension to my professional persona. However, beneath the day-to-day accomplishments, a seed of restlessness was sprouting…

The Decision

Deciding to leave my corporate career was not easy. It culminated years of introspection, deep thought, and numerous conversations with my family. But the guiding principle behind my decision was a simple yet powerful concept: minimizing future regret.

I found myself constantly asking, “When I’m 60, will I regret not taking this leap?” The answer was a resounding yes. As the saying goes, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” Indeed, there’s no perfect time to take the leap…

Helen Keller once said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”

This resonated deeply with me. Over the past two decades of my professional life, I’ve often wished I had taken certain opportunities that came my way. This time, I didn’t want to let my passion for Blockchain and Web3 technologies be another missed opportunity.

I was prepared, gathered the courage, and focused on the positives and the things that could go right. I decided not to fall into the trap of negativity and pessimism, not to obsess over what could go wrong. I chose to step out of my comfort zone and take the plunge.

The Calculated Risk

Taking the leap to leave my corporate job was not a reckless decision. It was a calculated risk backed by years of preparation, contemplation, and financial planning. My wife’s full-time job and our diverse investment portfolio and savings provided us with a financial safety net.

This financial stability gave me the confidence to step into the unknown and pursue my passion for Blockchain and Web3 technologies.

As Mark Zuckerberg once said, “The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that’s changing quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.”

I plan to continue expanding my investment portfolio while diving deeper into Blockchain and Web3. This calculated risk was not just about financial planning but also about aligning my career with my passions and interests. It’s about creating a future where I can contribute meaningfully to the field I’m passionate about.

The Support

My wife has been my rock during this transition. Her unwavering support and belief in my vision, even when it was just a seed of an idea, gave me the courage to plunge into solopreneurship. Her faith in me has been a constant source of strength and motivation, reminding me we are on this journey together.

Her support was not just about words of encouragement. It was about understanding the risks, challenges, and uncertainties that come with such a decision. It was about standing by my side, ready to face whatever comes our way. This journey is as much hers as it is mine, and I am eternally grateful for her companionship and support every step of the way.

The Freedom of Solopreneurship

The journey into solopreneurship has been a liberating one. It has given me the freedom to work on my terms, take risks, and put my creativity at the forefront. I’ve been able to contribute to the community in ways that were not possible in my previous role.

This path has allowed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The freedom to shape my path, decide what projects to take on, and make a direct impact has been empowering and fulfilling. It’s a different kind of satisfaction that comes from knowing that I am not just working for a paycheck but for a cause, I truly believe in.

The freedom of solopreneurship is not just about being your boss. It’s about having the flexibility to pursue what you truly love to align your work with your passion and beliefs. It’s about spending quality time with my young kids and wife, cooking often, reading often, working out regularly, and exploring places. It’s about living a life not dictated by a 9-to-5 schedule but shaped by my dreams and aspirations. It’s about living a life that feels authentic to who I am.

The Future and Conclusion

There’s a long road ahead, but my belief in myself and my resolve is unwavering. Leveraging my experience, knowledge, and, most importantly, the right attitude, I am ready to contribute meaningfully to the cause of decentralization. The potential in Blockchain, Crypto, Web3, DeFi, and Tokenization is immense and largely untapped. The future holds promise, and I am filled with optimism. Every day brings new challenges, but each one is a stepping stone on this journey.

As I turn 40, I am not just celebrating my past but also embracing my future. I am grateful for the journey that has brought me here and eager for the trip ahead. If my story can inspire even a single person standing at the edge of their comfort zone, contemplating whether to take the leap, it would be a victory. Remember, life truly begins at the end of your comfort zone.

Echoing Mark Twain’s words, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

So, here’s to 40 years and the journey ahead in the world of blockchain! By the time I turn 50, I hope to share a tale of successful solopreneurship. 🎂
