Why I know, I will make it on Medium
That statement sounds confident, doesn’t it? Oh, you even think it seems arrogant?
Well, of course it does. How do I know I’ll make it on a platform where I’ll compete with hundreds of thousands of authors from all over the world?
What makes me think I can do what over ninety percent of the authors here can’t?
When you ask this question, I ask you this counter-question: what makes you think you can’t do it?
Let’s not talk about me; let’s talk about you.
The provocative headline was not meant to portray me as a cool guy.
I chose this title because I am just as sure that you can earn at least a few hundred dollars a month with your articles on Medium.
And if I think you can do it, I have to believe I can do it first. Here are the reasons that make me confident.
I have already made it as an e-book author
Long before I came to Medium, I built a career as a thriller writer. I’m currently earning all my money in Amazon’s Kindle shop, writing, and selling e-books.
I’m not in the American shop, where the competition is most significant, but sell my books almost exclusively in Germany. But the German market is also huge, and the Kindle Shop has just over a million e-books — from self-publishers and large, established publishers.
In this competitive market, I regularly bring my books into the general top 100.
It took me four years to earn over €100 in a month for the first time. Here, on Medium, most serious writers manage it after a few months.
Today I make all my living with my e-books. I gave up my 9 to 5 job and am now a freelance author.
Success on Medium is not easy but simple
When I say that success on Medium is simple, I mean that you only have to follow a few basic rules to be successful here. These are the same rules that apply everywhere in business.
These rules are:
1. Show up every day: You can read this tip in every article that deals with success on Medium. It is the same tip that every book author, entrepreneur, or sportsman gets.
The idea behind it is simple: regular efforts in a field lead to success over time.
On Medium, this principle applies likewise. Anyone who writes new articles every day improves, feeds Google with regularly updated content, always stays in the minds of his readers, and quickly builds up a portfolio with which he can earn more money every day.
2. work with others: I learned this lesson as a Kindle author. The other authors are not my competitors in the first place, but a network I can rely on.
It’s not about buying and reviewing each other’s books (because that’s against the rules of Amazon), but about getting advice and support on things, you can’t do yourself.
Without other experienced authors, I wouldn’t have found my cover designer, nor would I have found out how Facebook and Amazon ads work effectively. And these are just two of many examples.
The longer you are involved, the more valuable your network becomes.
Here on Medium, I’ve been involved in networking from the very beginning. I have joined Facebook groups, exchange ideas with other authors, and comment on the work of other authors.
Over time, it will always pay to be cooperative, even if you don’t know beforehand in what form.
3. Promote your work: It goes without saying, but thousands of authors forget this vital part of the business.
Just because someone has written a brilliant book or an excellent article doesn’t mean they can find readers.
With Medium, it’s a bit easier because there are curators who select good quality articles and present them to a broader audience, but usually, this extra boost is not enough to reach many readers.
This is where networking comes in again. Long before you, as a medium author should think of paid advertisements, it is your network that increases the reach of your articles.
Post every new article in the Facebook groups that offer promo threads (e.g., Medium Mastery and Medium Dreamers).
Also, use free promo sites such as Hacker News, ManyStories, and similar offers. If you have a Twitter account, spread your articles about it as well.
But the most crucial part of your network is your followers. Every new article has the potential to attract new followers. The next piece you write will already have a broader audience.
If you manage to get your readers to subscribe to your newsletter, your chances of reaching them with your future articles will increase.
Instead of relying on Medium to show your articles to your followers, take it into your own hands, and let them know via email.
It is even better if you create your own publication because you can reach the followers of the publication at any time via the Letter function of Medium. This is a newsletter function that Medium makes available exclusively for publications.
All these things are relatively simple. Everyone can easily remember that you should publish, network, and advertise daily. More is not required to reach a larger audience and earn more and more money.
But as I said, simplicity is not effortless because you have to do the work!
Most people are not willing to invest the work
And here lies the key why I am sure to be successful on Medium. I am ready to do the necessary work. In addition, as a book author I have proven for many years that I am not only willing but also able to put this willingness into practice.
Let’s talk about you again at the end of this article: Are you ready to do the work? Will you write every day, build your network, and promote your work? Will you have the staying power and be patient?
If you can answer these questions with yes, you also have an excellent chance to earn your money with Medium. Let’s follow this path together.
Let us support each other, encourage each other, and be there for each other.
Success on Medium may not be easy. But it is simple. We should always think of that.
