Why I Followed My Instinct Last Sunday And Why It Was Worth It

I found myself, that’s what he said.

Sunday afternoon: time for a walk around my village. While enjoying the bright day, I noticed the signs of a new exhibition outside the city hall. It was about the works of a painter of the area I live in, and since I didn’t know anything about him, I decided to enter.

The paintings were mostly about the villages close to mine, places that I love deeply and know quite well. There was even a video of the painter at work right close to my house (I never noticed him!), then pictures of his study and sketches.

As always, the main difference was made by the people attending the event. One of the artist’s students welcomed us at the door and told us the story of the painter and of his school. That’s how I found out that there is a school for artists in my little village! That’s my next goal, I want to visit the school and check the courses I like.

Then we met the artist’s son. As if we were old friends — and not people he just met, he opened up his heart and told us about his complicated relationship with his famous father, and how he learned who he was just after his death, by opening a big chest full of pictures and painting.

That’s when he decided to create the exhibition in memory of his father. He said a sentence that clicked and that is still in my mind since I keep thinking about it: “I found out who my father was, and I found myself.”

Sometimes you look for your deepest nature outside yourself, in the reactions of other people to your behavior, in the image of yourself you think you show the world. Yet you might need to look deeper, to discover something about your family or your past. What child were you? Was your father a famous person? Was it difficult to compete with his role? I think that only by finding out about your fears and limiting beliefs, you know who you are and you accept and love yourself. Just like the man I met at the exhibition.

This short unplanned visit was an opportunity to practice some of the behaviors I want to improve next year:

  • Follow my instinct to find a new road, try something new, dare to enter a new place
  • Learn something about painting
  • Meet new people and listen to their stories
  • Grow my love for my village and the people who live here.

This was a special experience that gave a brand new sparkle to my days!

Thank you Trista Signe Ainsworth for your sweet prompt!
