Why I Decided to Return to Editing on Medium: In Life Things Change & That is Okay

A gratitude journey as editor, reader and writer

Sketch is by the author

“Proceed when the conditions are unfavourable…favourable conditions never come”

C.S. Lewis

I once read the above quote as advice from a well-known writer, and never forgot it. I recall the quote from time to time to help me during difficult times. We all have those times; times when everything goes wrong and we seem to stumble from one catastrophe towards another, and so it is perceived.

Yet, when we look closer we can see that there is and was so much good there too and without all the struggling there would be no gain, an old but true cliché.

A brief look at my Medium Journey

I joined Medium two years ago after reading for several months and deciding I might enjoy joining as a Medium partner. I then wrote every single day for two years and produced and published over 900 stories on Medium some were very successful stories, others not so successful.

I was invited to edit for a health publication and soon I found myself setting up my own publications, ‘Edit OR’ (a publication on writing that also showcases stories I read and enjoy on Medium), and ‘The Difffference: Achilles Heal’, at first a journey publication, where I hosted guest editors before deciding to make it about art and creativity instead. Those journeys continue and so does my journey as an editor.

A year ago, I said I would not be returning to edit for publications when I left the Health publication after a few months as editor; however, things have changed and I returned to editing last autumn and spent a few months editing every single day for ‘Real’. I enjoyed that process as the team was established and very supportive.

I find a cohesive team a real asset in any role, and yet there are always areas where there is room for growth, and, once again I decided to leave after a short period and was editing for Soul Magazine when I wrote the first draft of this a week ago.

I have been editing for ‘Soul Magazine’ every single day since late November and enjoyed sharing my favourite stories there as weekly curations before I took the decision to leave a few days ago after a short bout of persistent flu suggested it was time to slow down.

Apart from the joy I always receive from the act of writing, I have really enjoyed reading your stories, poems, and non-fiction writing as letters as editor, and I look forward to reading more of them in future, albeit as editor for my own publications, ‘All’s Well’ and ‘Shoe Love Mag’’, recent start-ups. (See calls for writers; below.)

Art

I have also been inspired to illustrate many of my non-fiction stories and a few of my fiction stories as well. This has been really good for me. So thank you Medium editors for accepting my art.

Gratitude

And thank you for being part of my journey as a reader, writer and editor on Medium. I continue to grow, and I am very happy to those of you who chose to give me a chance at editing and to you who read and publish my work and clap for it. You make a huge difference to my day, reader. Thank you, dearest, most treasured reader.
