Why I Chose to Become a Friend of Medium

And you should consider it too.

If you’re not a member of Medium, you can still read this story here.

I signed up immediately after I read the notification about the new Friends of Medium subscription. I just strongly believe in one thing:

If you want to receive something, prepare to give.

It’s how the laws of the Universe work. But this story is not about the laws of attraction and all of that.

It just works.

Think about it. Even here on Medium: you give your valuable knowledge and experience, and you receive money for it. You can’t receive before you give, right?

And there’s more to it.

The more you give, the more you will receive.

I don’t have to prove it: the more you write on Medium, the more you will earn. Consistency is one of the key factors for success.

Ok, I’ll cut the motivational speech. But I do believe this is how it has to be. Right, I stop now.

Zipping it. Getting to the point.

New Writers,

Hear me out: Medium is not an overnight success! You need to work it out for a long period of time until you get there. The membership is one of many tools you have to get there faster.

And this is one great reason why you should consider Friends of Medium Subscription:

People can share your story links with non-members, and you still earn from their views and reads!

Important remark: you don’t earn from a link you shared to your own story.

How cool is that! It’s a win-win for all of us! Medium gets more external traffic and engagement, non-members can read premium content, and writers still monetize!

Don’t worry, non-members still get prompted to subscribe after reading. And when members read through the same link, you earn from their membership. Everything is under control.

So you can freely use your link wherever you like!

You can find the link in the share button of any story.

Besides, generally, you earn more — I can’t prove it, but I got the feeling that I started to gain more views and reads after changing the subscription. This is logical since I started sharing my friends’ links at the beginning of each story, so non-members can now read, instead of leaving. This increases your overall read ratio, even if you’re not earning from your own FOMs link.

I’d like to believe it is so.

Non-members:

Seriously. I’m stopping commenting, clapping, or engaging in any way with your articles. Even if I like them!

Ok, I’m kidding! Of course, I will comment if I can bring more value.

But!

Since my membership drives more revenue for writers I read, I’d prefer to share it with other Friends of Medium. For the sake of supporting each other. It just feels more natural.

By the way, I created one more reason to become a Friend of Medium, read more here.

Don’t hate me for that! No harsh feelings…or should I say: no feelings at all! It’s my personal choice!

And I fully support you, I do! You’re here to earn, not to spend. Yes, I hear you…I was there too (for a day or so…).

But hey, the laws of the Universe work for you too. So if you’re struggling with views and reads and boosts, think about it...Just for a moment think about it…maybe you should try it out for a change, you can downgrade or cancel at any time.

And by the way, no one from Medium is paying me to write this article. I just see many benefits in this new membership and I think more of us should share them. Because everybody wins — writers, readers, and Medium.

So if you’re still reading, let me know what you think! How do you find your Friends of Medium membership? Non-members, did I give you food for thought?

Thanks for reading!
