Why I Believe You Can Be Healed by God
Stories of Healings from My Own Life
I never believed in miracles growing up. When I look back at my youth and even part of my early college years, I did not believe that someone could be supernaturally healed or that miraculous signs and wonders could happen.
Whether from my upbringing or my personal lack of understanding, it was impossible for anyone to be healed of sickness, cancer, or other physical ailments. It had never happened where I grew up and it sure never happened in my family.
And so, when someone asked for healing prayer shortly after I became a Christian I thought they were crazy. I assumed they were expecting me to slap them on the forehead and yell in their face like the crazy TV preachers I had seen growing up.
I think I might have offered some kind of weak prayer that probably didn’t even sound like I believed what I was saying. It was a sad business.
And yet, over the last few years, I have been going down this road of experiencing the supernatural power of the God who created heaven and earth.
I am going to venture into this territory where I once believed only crazy people lived. And I want to share what I have learned. Because it is so mind-blowing that it changes everything for the way I see the world and the way I look at people who need and want to be healed.
But it all starts with a mission trip.
The First Healing
While I was a junior in college, I was invited to be part of a summer mission trip to San Diego, California. During this time we would be taught and would reach out to the community as part of our time.
One particular evening when we were all meeting together, there were about 60 college students, one of my fellow participants stated that his aunt has stage four cancer in her lungs. She was given little time to live and decided that she wanted as many people as a possible prayer for her.
And so, we joined in this prayer chain for total healing of her body.
Now, I was skeptical, to be honest. But the way people around me talked about seeing people healed made me wonder if it was really possible. And so we prayed. For an hour. We prayed fervently for health to return to the aunt none of us ever met.
After we prayed we didn’t hear back for a while. Finally, about a week later, my friend shared with our group that his aunt’s cancer was completely gone.
The story as told to us was that she woke up one morning feeling the best she ever felt, went to the doctor and when the tests came back there were literally holes in her lungs where the caner once resided in her body.
And now, it was gone. She was healed.
This was the first time I participated in anything close to healing prayer. But it was amazing. We praised God and I began to ask if it was possible for him to heal anyone. This one moment was a catalyst to a future I did not know would be impacted with healing.
The Story of Healing
A couple of years ago, I wrote a story about a woman who was healed at our church. She was a slight, humble lady who had both her knees replaced. When she came out after the second knee was replaced, one leg was shorter by half an inch.
This difference was just enough to cause many other issues in her hips and back that she hadn’t had prior to the knee replacements. And she was in tremendous pain. But she believed that she could be healed.
And sure enough, one evening after a church service she asked for a pastor to pray for her to be healed. And in an instant, she felt a tug on her leg (that no one did themselves), and all of a sudden her leg was longer.
At the church services, they confirmed the leg lengths were now the same. And this poor woman who had been plagued with pain now was pain-free. Even her doctor could not understand how it was possible that she grew half an inch of the leg.
While the first story set the foundation, this story set the table for what I was about to see happen around me.
The Child Who Prays for Healing
My six-year-old has a special gifting. She can lay hands on an area that someone feels pain, pray for the pain to go away, and it does. My sweet little girl, with the full power of the Holy Spirit, can pray pain out of people’s bodies on a regular basis.
The first time it happened was with someone at church. They were talking about a headache they had had for several days, but it wouldn’t go away. My daughter suggested that we pray to make it go away as Jesus did.
And so, we all laid our hands on this person’s head and my daughter prayed that they would feel better and that the head pain would go away.
And in an instant it did.
This has led to her praying away countless headaches, joint pains, and back pains. And she just knows God will answer so she keeps praying when people look like they need it. My own daughter has healed the bodies of those who were in need.
Not too bad for the daughter of a man who didn’t believe miracles could happen.
Praying for My Wife
We didn’t have trouble conceiving our first two children. It actually seemed like we might have trouble not conceiving children based on them. And that was true until my wife got sick. And then she had to have surgery. And all of a sudden, we couldn’t seem to have children.
Nearly three years went by and we couldn’t understand.
Finally, over the last six months or so, I started praying every morning and night that my wife’s body would be healed. It turned out that my wife’s hormones were severely off and this is why we were having a hard time having kids.
And it was messing with her body so much that we were afraid something was really wrong. But, we prayed often. And we prayed with an expectation of a miracle. Fervent prayers from ourselves and others lifted my wife up into God’s hands and we waited.
And then all of a sudden, we had a positive pregnancy test.
We shocked and floored, but I knew it was possible this time around. I knew it was possible for the God who created everything to fix the hormones in my wife’s body and make it possible for her to be pregnant again.
And God stepped down and made it possible. Not only is my wife pregnant, but all her hormone levels are exactly where they should be. And everything is progressing well. A true miracle happened in our household for our family.
And it all started with prayer.
Supernatural Power is Available to All
There are a few things I know to be true about our lives. One of them is this:
When we believe in Jesus, we receive the full power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead. It is in the Holy Spirit which we can make use of our weakness and do something great.
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and aid in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” — John 7:37–39
And when we pray, ask for healing and expect for healing there is a supernatural power that brings the impossible to possible.
In fact, God wants us to pray and believe for healing to happen because it shows that we trust him. And it gives the opportunity to show others how good he is. Because God is good all of the time.
Anything that isn’t good, doesn’t come from God.
So, when we believe in Jesus, we receive the Holy Spirit. When we receive the Holy Spirit, we have the ability to do great and amazing things for God’s Kingdom because Jesus said it would be so.
“Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” — John 14:12
Ultimately, unlocking supernatural power in our lives means we need to believe.
Healing Going Forward
While it has been years of preparation to comprehend and acknowledge healings and miracles, now I expect to see these things happen. And it is important for me to encourage such foundational belief in my children and those around me.
And I am expectant to see more healings and miracles happen in my life and in the lives of people that I encounter on a regular basis.
I also acknowledge that it isn’t anything that I actually did to see my wife’s healing happen. But it was the power of God and his will which moved. And I think, my role was to partner with God in looking for his will for our lives.
I believe people can be healed through prayer. And that God wants this to happen. But we must believe this to be true. And one of the best ways to start believing is by hearing stories of healings.
