Why I Attached This Accessory to My 16-Inch MacBook Pro

I was nervous — I’ll admit

If there’s one way to make your MacBook even more enjoyable to use, it’s with a bunch of accessories.

Sometimes, however, it takes just one accessory to completely change the way you use your laptop.

That happened for me with the MOFT ‘invisible’ cooling stand. I was sceptical of the Indiegogo project at first, but as soon as I attached the stand to my laptop, it made total sense.

What is it?

The MOFT invisible stand isn’t actually invisible — it’s worth confirming this, straight off. But it does live up to its name in so far as it can be attached to your laptop and barely make its presence known until you need it.

Made from graphene (which is apparently the “thinnest thermally conductive material on earth”), the MOFT stand attaches via a reusable sticky pad to the base of your laptop. At around 3mm thin, it fits pleasingly flush against the laptop’s chassis when not in use.

When you do need to use the stand, it can be swung out in a couple of different ways, depending on the height you require. In doing so, it elevates the laptop from the surface you’ve placed it on, providing a better viewing angle and more efficient cooling.

How I use it

The MOFT cooling stand has been attached to my 16-inch MacBook Pro for the last few weeks, and it has been particularly useful for two scenarios.

The first is as a neat way to position the laptop next to my Studio Display. It makes using the MacBook alongside the display far more convenient and comfortable, thanks to the additional height.

I also use the stand whenever I’m using the laptop by itself. Whether that’s at home on the breakfast bar or in a coffee shop, the MOFT stand gives me the height I didn’t realise I was missing.

Cooling? That’s less of an issue thanks to the incredibly thermally efficient 16-inch MacBook Pro, but it is nice to know that the MOFT stand has cooling in mind if I happen to be smashing through a particularly vigorous Final Cut Pro editing session.

The good stuff

I was initially cautious about the MOFT stand because I didn’t like the idea of attaching something to my beloved 16-inch MacBook Pro. However, I hadn’t considered the fact that MOFT has made its stand so easy to attach and detach without leaving any form of residue.

That’s the beauty of the sticky pad; it can be reused after a quick clean. Yet, it’s super secure, too — I’ve never once worried about the laptop slipping from its grasp.

The two elevation positions on the MOFT stand also feel great. I use the lower one most of the time, because it provides just the right viewing angle and a surprisingly satisfying typing experience over having the laptop flat on the desk.

I’m surprised by how much it has transformed my relationship with the MacBook Pro. Due to it being a production machine, I can spend many a long day sitting in front of that 16-inch screen editing, and there’s something about having it in an elevated position that makes it far more comfortable.

There are, however, some trade-offs, as you might suspect.

The trade-offs

Rather than downsides, I see these as trade-offs with the MOFT stand. They are inevitable due to the way in which the product works, and it’s why you’ll need to take the following points into consideration when buying.

As noted, you have to stick the MOFT stand to your laptop; this is an accessory that is designed to remain in place permanently. For me, it hasn’t been an issue (who looks at the underside of their MacBook, after all?), but if you’re particularly fussed about the aesthetics of your device, it might be a concern.

It can also be a little fiddly at first to position, although I’ve found that it becomes far easier with practice — to the point where I’m now able to flick it out like a master MOFT user. There’s also no escaping the fact that it does lift the laptop slightly from the desk, thus adding a bit of a wobble if you use the laptop without elevating the stand.

That’s it, really. The aforementioned wobble hasn’t bothered me simply because I always elevate the laptop with the MOFT stand now.

I know the biggest issue for some will be the fact that the MOFT stand is designed as a permanent accessory, but that was a concern I had, and it quickly evaporated once I started using it.

Conclusion

I have no intention of removing the MOFT stand from my 16-inch MacBook Pro and I’m genuinely surprised by how quickly I’ve taken to its utility and ever-present nature.

While not for everyone, if you’re looking for an affordable, convenient, and secure way to elevate your MacBook — I’d recommend the MOFT cooling stand wholeheartedly.
