Why I am writing

I always enjoyed writing, even though I only do it occasionally but I’ve never shared something online before. Most of the time I’m just taking notes to process ideas. Recently I started to write more regular here are the main reasons why.

Improve my English

As for many other writers on medium English is not my first language. I do have a limited vocabulary and I’m not able to express myself the same way as I can in my native language, which is German.

I see writing as a chance to work actively with other languages. Almost daily I’m using English passively when reading texts, watching videos or listening to something. What I am lacking are the opportunities to apply the English language actively — to speak it and to write it.

I hope that the activation of the more active parts will allow me to grow the vocabulary that I’m using actively.

Improve my writing skills

That goes hand in hand with improving my English. I want to learn to articulate my thoughts better. I often have a lot of ideas in mind and I’m not able to communicate them fully. I consider writing as a useful way of improving the skill of putting thoughts into words.

I think that I must write regularly in order to improve, thereby it becomes also a practice of self-discipline.

Exploring topics

I’ve written an article about the teach to learn approach where teaching and explaining a topic is used to learn it. That’s what I want to achieve by writing about topics that I’m interested in. Beforehand I read a lot about a topic and will try to embed it within my own thoughts to learn it deeper and to put it into a different perspective.

Writing forces you to look at the things differently

Some posts that I’m writing are a sort of advice to myself. Putting things and experience into words helps me to reinforce the lessons I’ve learned. When publishing it online others may find it useful as well and share their own thoughts and insights about the topic, that’s another main motivation.

What are your reasons to write?

This is my 12th post for the ILLUMINATION 30-day writing challenge by Dr Mehmet Yildiz described in this article.
