Why Going to Estate Sales is Big Money in Disguise

Valuable collectibles are sitting right in front of your eyes

For the past two years, I started going to estate sales. One business owner who manages estate sales sends me a text when he finds a sale that may interest me.

He knows I’m an investor so he’ll send me a quick note of the listing.

In the latest estate sale, the previous owner had a lot of paintings. Some of the paintings were nice, but I found something that caught my eye.

I came across a signed Hank Aaron memorabilia photo.

I’m not into signed autographs too much but do have some baseball and football cards. This one collectible, however, I couldn’t let pass by.

If you don’t know, Hank Aaron was the home run king for nearly two decades until Barry Bonds became the home run king in 2001. Bonds also set the record for home runs in a season with 73 that he also set that year.

Of course, some may disagree since Bonds was using performance-enhancing drugs during baseball’s steroid era of the 1990s to early 2000s. Baseball didn’t start testing for steroids or performance-enhancing drugs until 2003. Barry Bonds and other baseball players were eligible for the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, but they never received enough votes to make it in.

At estate sales, the previous occupant has passed away, and the family doesn’t care for a lot of the items that the person owns. So it’s similar to a fire sale sometimes as you’ll find a lot of items at reduced prices. You may even get to ask for a lower price since everything in the home has to be sold within a day or two.

Many times you’ll see dishware, furniture, clothing, and so on. But if you get there early, you can sometimes find some valuable gems at the estate sale.

At other estate sales, I have found old coins to add to my collection that I mentioned here a little over a year ago.

You can find estate sales listed in your area on Facebook. That is how it works where I live and it’s convenient as the estate sale host will sometimes show previews of what they’re listing for the sale.

Someone’s garbage can be your treasure at estate sales.
