Sales is one of the most sought-after careers yet it is extremely frowned upon. Including myself, I hated the thought of pursuing a career in sales. My manager noticed that I was doing a pretty good job at interacting with other individuals and being the people person. People sell products to people and that’s when it struck him that maybe I might just be the right fit for sales, and he offered me a Sales position which is completely different from my Engineering domain.

I was flattered that he considered me for this role however I was not convinced to take it up because I was comfortable doing what I was doing, and I was doing a pretty good job at it. However, I informed him that I’d consider it and give my decision within a day or two. I started to list of all the perks and cons that’s when it hit me that I was stuck in this comfort zone of mine. I probably wouldn’t grow much if I kept being in that comfort zone. So finally, I decided to take up the leap of faith and splurge into the world of sales.

I do not consider myself an extrovert and getting into sales means that I must get used to frequently striking conversations and convincing people. Initially, it was slightly challenging to accustom myself to the world of sales. It has been a nerve-wracking journey throughout but honestly, it is one of the best decisions I have taken. It completely changed the trajectory of my career, and it has helped me change a lot as a person.

Fear of rejection — Not everyone is going to purchase your product or the service you are offering despite doing your level best to seal the deal. After getting rejected a couple of times, you stop fearing rejections and start to learn to not take rejections to heart.

Confidence — The massive change that people noticed in me after taking up the sales role was my confidence, and it was over the roof. Sales does help in growing a thick skin.

The Networking Opportunities — The networking opportunities are immense. The majority of my clientele consisted of CEOs, MDs, Owners, and extremely influential people.

Incentives — Sales is the only profession where there is no limit to how much a person can earn, and the numbers are pretty overwhelming. It is directly proportional to the amount of work you are willing to put in.

Career Growth Opportunities — I cannot emphasize more on this aspect, the growth is unlike any other domain. You get promoted quickly depending upon your performance and if you are doing a pretty good job at sales then your competitors start to notice you and they do offer promising packages as well.

Flexibility — You don’t necessarily need to show up to the office. You can work at your own pace depending upon your flexibility provided that you are generating sales.

Sales have been extremely crucial not just in my career but also in my personal growth. If you have similar experiences, please feel free to share them in the comment section. If you happen to like my content, do consider following me.
