Why Don’t Americans Seem to Be Interested in Football and Cricket?
These are the world’s two most popular sports

America invented their own sports and spread them across the world
Are Americans so exceptionalist that they ignore every world sport that is the most popular everywhere else? After all, we invented our own sports. Basketball was invented in the state of Massachusetts.
Baseball was created in New York. The first American football game originated from a game played by Rutgers and Princeton University in New Jersey. The sport took elements from rugby and football (soccer).
All of these sports have eventually also become popular worldwide and Americans dominate in many of them, particularly basketball. The sports that came before them though, and that are much more popular in the world such as football (soccer) and cricket are older and much more popular worldwide with many rabid fans.
The US does have an international football club
The US men and women have a football (soccer) club but only the women have seen international success. The men are still far behind the women in talent and resources and the general public in the United States has responded to these events with apathy. These events aren’t viewed as much as Super Bowls, NBA Finals, and the World Series, for example.
The women in the US obviously get more views than the men here because they’re simply better but the Super Bowl and the World Series and other events easily outperform them in the ratings.
Cricket? What’s that?
And cricket? Forget about it. If you asked anybody in the USA what cricket was, they’d think you were talking about the chirping insect that makes loud noises at night. Forget about explaining wicketkeeping, bowling, creases, and the pitch.
All that will sound foreign to them and the talk of overs and such will overwhelm them. I barely understood cricket until I studied the game more last week when I wrote a story about it. It’s a very skilled game and has a lot of nuance to it that you wouldn’t notice at first glance. I can see why the rest of the world loves it. Heck, I can see why the rest of the world loves both of these sports in general.
The T-20 Cricket World Cup and getting familiar with the game
The United States and the West Indies will be co-hosts of the 2024 T-20 Cricket World Cup. I think that this kind of exposure and the fact that the American team automatically qualifies because of host status will raise the profile of professional cricket in the country.
We will all get a first look if you’re unfamiliar with it here. I’ve tried watching matches online. I don’t understand yet how the score is displayed and what all of the numbers on the bottom of the screen mean. I will eventually understand it and I did watch a video about it the other day.
Soccer and this year’s World Cup in Qatar
At least with soccer, the score is pretty straightforward for the American viewer. There is a number on one side of the screen for one team and then another number for the opposing team’s score. The format is similar to how the score is shown in other American sports such as baseball, American football, or basketball.
Thinking ahead, do I ever think that cricket and international football will catch on in the United States? Unless the men’s and women’s soccer teams are both good for years to come, I doubt it although this year’s US men’s team going to Qatar is supposed to be the best team they have fielded in a long time.
Cricket is a long way away from becoming a popular sport in the States
Cricket, well, that sport hasn’t had enough time to catch on in the United States. Sure, there is a national men’s time and a lot of immigrants from countries where the sport is popular have introduced the sport to the United States but it is still years, maybe decades, down the road until cricket will pick up. As to answer my question from the title, why aren’t Americans interested?

These sports are growing in the States but are still nowhere as popular as in the rest of the world
For soccer, it’s just the lack of talent against the rest of the world, specifically on the men’s national team. Sure, the Major League Soccer (MLS) is growing every year and now has 29 teams as of 2023 and the women’s team is always good but it’s still not enough to draw the interest that the rest of the world has in the sport.
And for cricket, it’s just an unfamiliarity. For many Americans, anything that is too different from what they are used to takes a long time to catch on. I think that even with a 2024 cup coming up for the Americans, the men will have to do well to even register on the sports fans’ radar here.
Do I think they’ll never be popular here? No, of course, I don’t think that. In fact, if you didn’t know, the first international cricket match was actually played in the United States back in the 1800s. Strange, huh?
