Why Do White Women Hate Meghan Markle So Much?

Because she married a man they considered theirs and theirs only

When I was a little girl, I too read fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. I dreamt of one day finding my prince, one that looked just like the white, handsome, blond, blue-eyed men in those stories.

And then when I turned 13, I started reading Barbara Cartland. She spent pages describing those white, handsome, earls, princes, barons, and counts in her stories. I wondered when I would one-day meet mine.

Somewhere down the road though, I realized that there were dashing brown and Black princes in the world too, so much so that Sinbad and Aladdin became more the type of man I was attracted to. I loved their dark hair and dark eyes, I found them dashing.

When I moved to Switzerland in the 80s, I found myself in a world mostly inhabited by the type of princes found in Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and those Cartland novels. They were all, white.

As I approached adolescence, I yearned for a boyfriend, but none of those white, blue-eyed, blond-haired princes were ever interested in me …that was until a met Ben. We fell deeply in love with each other.

My white girlfriends were surprised that Ben was interested in me — whom they considered their lowly Black friend. They questioned me incessantly about why he would be interested in me rather than in one of them.

On numerous occasions, they tried to seduce him. One of my friends even had the audacity to hint that white boys were made for white women only. According to her, I was to go find myself a brown or Black man to date. Even when I met my white husband, white women whom I thought were friends, made it clear that I shouldn’t be dating a white man.

Where am I going with all this?

Well, in my experience, and I do think it’s legitimate because I’ve been around for 50-odd years, white women in particular think that they own white men. They become incredibly nasty when a white man chooses to marry someone that isn’t white. All too often I have heard them say things like:

“White men only date women of color because there is no white woman available or because there is something wrong with him so no white woman wants him”.

The level of arrogance and narcissism in that statement always hits me hard every time.

Now let’s come to the subject of Meghan Markle.

In popular discourse and for centuries, white princes, especially from the British Royal Family have always been expected to marry white women. Even when little Black girls said they wanted to marry either William or Harry, their Black mothers would cut short that dream immediately by telling them that that was completely impossible.

Little white girls could however still dream of marrying a prince from the British Royal Family. It was a perk they inherited with their white privilege. What they also unconsciously knew was that they wouldn’t face any competition from Black or brown girls when it came to marrying a royal because you see, Prince William or Harry could only ever marry a white girl, there would be no exceptions to the rule. That is what generations of marriages of Royal Family members has shown us.

Except that, this time, Prince Harry didn’t choose to adhere to a suffocating tradition, he chose to marry the woman he loved and she happened to be Black. That was the first shock for white women. On top of that, she wasn’t a docile Black woman thanking them for having allowed her to marry Harry. She is an intelligent Black woman and she has a perspective on several societal issues. White women are already mad that she married someone they considered their property, they hate her even more because she is an intelligent, beautiful, and strong leader. They envy and hate her at the same time. How dare she be so brilliant?

And so they invent all types of narratives to make people believe that Meghan is a bully, an angry Black woman, and a narcissist. They’ll try to destroy her because they cannot stand the fact that a Black woman is making a white prince happy and content. The age-old jealousy that white women have vis-a-vis brown and Black women is on full display when it comes to Harry and Meghan's relationship, and unfortunately, it is here to stay. But as Harry and Meghan correctly put it at the end of their recent docuseries: Love wins. I am personally rooting that for them, it wins every single time.

Thank you for reading my perspective.
