CONFESSIONS
Why do we approach reading like it’s a chore?
Shouldn’t we supposed to enjoy it and relax

We all read for different reasons. Some people read because they want to learn. Others read just because they have to. Whatever the case, I have a question for you — have you ever thought about why do we approach reading like a chore?
I know for me it sometimes feels like a chore. I’ve never been an avid reader and I’ve been struggling with getting myself to read more. It’s a process full of ups and downs like any other habit you are trying to introduce into your routine.
When I see a book title or simple “reading” in my planner it feels like another thing on my to-do list I need to cross out rather than something I actually enjoy doing.
For example, yesterday and a day before I was so busy in the office that by the time I got home the only thing I wanted to do is cozy up and watch Netflix. However, next to me on my nightstand was a book I recently started and whenever I would look in that direction I felt guilty for not reading it. It’s usually the feeling I get when I don’t do some chore I am supposed to do.
What is the point of reading if not to enjoy it? Books give us a chance to find out about different places, different times and different people. It’s something often listed as a self-care activity, a time for yourself, a time for relaxing. It shouldn’t be a chore and it shouldn’t feel like one either.
Did you notice that sometimes reading feels like another chore you need to do? Or is it just me?
