Why do Some People Like to See Successful People Stumble?
#3: Comfort in their mediocrity
I had an opportunity to reflect on this one lately. It is a well known fact that there are some people who rejoice over successful people’s stumbling. And I can’t help but wonder :
- How can a healthy spirited person even think and rejoice over another fellow human being’s challenge ? (Is it naive to think so? — maybe)
- How can one human be delighted in another human’s “suffering” ?
What comes to my mind as to explain such is a lack of awareness, empathy and consciousness. Because if you breathe, you are alive, you are human.. one day or another you may face the exact same challenge, who knows ? People who still haven’t understood that we are in this together can only behave or think that way.
That pattern of thinking also shows a certain lack of compassion which is so central in our humanity journey. You don’t know what the future reserves you, oh you don’t know. So why do some of us still act as if they hold the key and are immune to life’s challenges?
It is so delusional. Only time can tell, and as far as I know, no one has gained holy control over time yet.
These are the other reasons that came to my mind as to why some people rejoice when they see a successful person face a challenge :
#1: Jealousy
Yes, jealous people run all over. Sometimes closer to you than you may imagine. Those are the ones that will rejoice over your challenging moments. But what they forget is that, as long as the challenge does not take you down to death, you can still rise, get back on your feet and keep on being awesome because that’s your inner mystery: no one can steal or destroy it (unless you allow them to).
#2: Envy
Envious people will be happy to see successful persons they’re envious about face challenges. They will laugh behind closed doors and delights in the fact that they don’t longer envy them in the situation they find themselves in.
#3: Comfort in their mediocrity
Mediocre people will be entertained watching a successful person in the dark spot. That will comfort them in their mediocrity. Those are the ones who don’t dare, who are too scared to leave their unhealthy comfort zone. So when they see the brave person take one step and fall, they will rejoice and be glad they did not take any risk.
#4: Frustrations in their own lives
Frustrated people, that’s not a scoop, they can be found all over. People who dream about a certain life or relationship but don’t have the courage nor the confidence to go for it. Those ones will also be joyful to see those who dare stumble in a domain or another.
And finally, in any given situation there is input and outcome. What is often defined as a stumble is an undesired outcome. What truly matters is what you do with that undesired outcome. Do you choose to ruminate for the rest of your life or do you choose to use it as a stepping stone and try another strategy? That’s up to each of us.
