Why do People Refuse to grab the Golden Ring?

Without hope and vision, there’s nothing

I was sitting on a park bench next to the transitional housing complex where I had been staying. Most of the residents were only allowed to stay there for two years.

Olivia, the woman I met on Facebook, and who I later married, and I had a plan. She was looking for a place in Columbia South Carolina. While she was doing that, I worked with my case manager.

I went through the motions because having a “plan B is a good idea

I filled out applications that he gave me for subsidized housing. At least I had a plan. quite a few of my neighbors did not. I don’t know how many ended up back on the streets. I would see a lot of them with their backpacks walking around Minneapolis.

“Why are they back on the streets?” I would ask myself. I came to understand that homeless was not a category for those people. It was a state of being.

Without hope or a dream, what’s the point?

They could not, or would not grab the ring and get out of that life. Hopes and dreams died for those people long ago. I’m a reader and I have an active imagination.

I could see the new life ahead of me. It gave me something to look forward to and kept me from stepping in front of the light rail on my way to the library.

He left the streets, but the streets never left him

Recently, a man I had come to know here in South Carolina had the same opportunity. He had a woman that loved him and a job. He could have built a life with her and left the streets behind him.

He chose another path. We don’t know if he is alive or dead. He vanished without a trace. The streets called him back and he didn’t resist the call.

It’s hard to help people who have given up

I don’t understand that way of thinking. Drinking and drugging lead to death. He had a brief exposure to another life. He chose to go back to the streets.

Politicians and Ministers can talk all they want to about criminal justice reform. They can talk about housing the homeless and Drug Rehabilitation.

If the people they are trying to help don’t want to change their street mindset it’s a waste of time and money. A person can not walk toward a future that they refuse to see.

Final thought:

When I was homeless, I learned about despair. I am thankful that I had a vision of a better future. If I had not had that vision I’m sure I would still be on the streets today.

Never stop dreaming and don’t lose hope. To do so is to be like the walking dead.
