Why Do People Fear Silence?

Is it because thinking scares them?

I would be sitting in the library in Minneapolis. Homeless people love libraries. I would be sitting around other homeless people. They would be loud and some clowns would always have music playing. Security or library staff would come by to quiet everyone down, but it never lasted.

In the waiting area at the shelter, it would get so loud I had to stifle the urge to scream. I never got a full night’s rest because no one would shut up in the sleeping area. That’s one reason I can’t remember a lot of details.

The sensory overload was too much

I couldn’t process information because there was too much noise. I don’t understand the need to be loud and to have noise all the time. I enjoy solitude and quiet. I do better writing when it’s quiet. I found that I can write when there are distractions, it takes harder work, but I can do it.

People are used to noise and distractions, and they have a hard time when it’s quiet. My wife has that problem. There has to be a TV, her boombox, or some noise at all times, and it has to be loud.

We can’t think too deeply with all the noise

That’s why there’s so much stupidity in the world today. People are afraid of thought to the point that they need noise. They use distractions to drown out introspection and wonder. People need to unplug. It would do wonders for mental health and clarity. If we turned off our devices and looked each other in the eyes and had conversations, what would we learn?

We could understand each other better and there would be less strife. Critical thinking can’t thrive in an environment of constant noise and distractions. I know our devices hurt sleep.

I’m Dyslexic, focusing is hard most of the time, and noise makes it harder

It’s hard for me. A lot of times I have to write in the evening while my wife is watching TV, or playing music. It’s her apartment too, so I can’t tell her to turn everything off and stare at a wall. It would drive her nuts and make her cranky as Hell.

I have no trouble at all not having a TV on for days. I get so much writing done when my wife visits family or out with one of her sisters for a few hours. I started writing this a few minutes ago.

I wrote this a lot faster than if I wrote it during the day

It’s 9:30 in the evening and my wife is in bed. I have written more words in thirty minutes uninterrupted than I have written all day. I’m thinking I will stay up late more often and write. Who knows? I might enter a flow state that I hear so much about.

There’s too much noise and not enough thought in this world. How do people stand it? Why are they afraid to sit in solitude, read a book, and think? people need to think deep thoughts and meditate in solitude and quiet sometimes.

We would all get along better if we unplugged and read a book and sat with our thoughts in silence

There needs to be more peace in the world. It can start on an individual level. Try spending a few hours a day with the devices off. If you can and the weather is nice, go sit in a park with a book for a few hours.

When I lived in Florida, there were times I would go to the beach in the mornings after work. There would be no one except a few elderly snowbirds walking on the beach. I would swim for a bit and lie on the beach.

I would sleep well the rest of the day

The quiet and the soft sounds of the waves hitting the shore and the seagulls crying would chill me out. I would go home and sleep like a log the rest of the day and wake up refreshed. We all need peace and the sounds of nature. So, why not make it a part of our lives?

Final thought:

Give your brain a rest, leave the devices at home and get outside, or sit and think while staring at a wall. A few minutes of quiet will do you good.
