Why Do Leaders Want Such Power?

With great power comes an even bigger headache.

I’ve often wondered why billionaires continue to work.

If you don’t need to work another day in your life, and your friends and family (and probably your grandkids) are set for life, why keep grinding it out to earn more? Why not travel the world? Why not spend all your time with your family?

I understand that many wealth-giants become successful through a passion for what they do. And I understand that it’s not always about the money. But after a certain point, doesn’t the responsibility and demand for running a huge business just add stress and clutter to your life?

I’m not implying that once you hit a certain point you should call it a day and become a couch potato. On the contrary. I think once you’re financially comfortable you should explore new possibilities, find new ways to use your skills, and continue to live a peaceful and purposeful life.

But something that confuses me to a larger extent, is why people desire so much power?

I think Yuval Harari put it nicely.

“Whoever comes to power in 2021 will be like somebody coming to a party after the party is already over, and the only thing left to do is wash the dirty dishes.”

Why are politicians fighting tooth and nail to take over a country at a time like this? It was already bad enough a decade ago with all kinds of economic, environmental, political, and social issues.

But the world seems to be imploding in on itself and every leader that takes the reins seems to be nothing more than a catalyst for its collapse.

I understand that someone’s gotta do it. But at this point, I’d expect leaders to reluctantly accept the job as opposed to throwing everything but the kitchen sink to get it.

One benefit I see, however, is that the world is currently very malleable. Life is so uncertain and as the tides of change keep gaining momentum, the leaders of the world have no blueprint to solve the onslaught of crises.

The world feels so lost and governments are no different. This creates a unique opportunity to capitalize on the receptivity to new ideas and solutions.

We could choose to work together and rebuild the world through cooperation and global solidarity or divide ourselves further through competition and isolation. We could recognize the importance of our ‘essential workforce’ and build a society founded on justice and reciprocity, or we could strengthen the powerful corporations and further marginalize the very people that continue to carry the world on their backs.

The leaders and governments of the world have a lot to think about and many choices to make. Even when things are so bad, they still want the job and the power to lead their people. I’m not sure why.

But now that they have it, they have an added responsibility. Because once a choice is made and a direction is chosen, a new order will solidify that will prove much harder to change.

We don’t want another wakeup call to shake our foundation. So let’s make the right choices.
