Why Do I Write?

I don’t know about you, but I always question myself; my reason for doing things; my motivations. I particularly scrutinise my writing and why I even write in the first place. Is it necessary? Is anybody even reading? Does anyone actually care?

In searching for my ‘voice’, that authentic, intuitive voice I so desperately try to spill out onto paper (or through the keyboard), I ruminate on my feelings and the real reason I scribble words and ramblings for the world to see.

Honestly, some of these reasons are selfish and ego-serving. But a lot of them are part of that innate, human calling to give something back to the community — to have purpose.

Reasons why I write:

  • To express myself and pull out emotions
  • To empower myself; to feel proud
  • To be loyal to myself; to keep promises
  • To know that others are listening; to feel validated
  • To inform the reader; challenge them; comfort them
  • To explore new and unknown worlds
  • To form an opinion and build strength within myself
  • To remember and record life events; to dig deeper
  • To play with language, words and sounds
  • To paint pictures; to make music
  • To make the reader feel something, remember something, learn something
  • To illuminate the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable
  • To influence the reader to change for the better
  • To understand myself, my family, my friends
  • To understand life

Why do you write?

Do your reasons overlap with mine? Tell me in your comments — I’d love to know.
