Why Do I Feel Like I Am Living in a Third World Country and Not in the United States?
Mr. President, stop tweeting and start working.
Everyone I talk to back home in India asks me the same question — WHAT HAPPENED TO AMERICA? Why have we completely failed at controlling the Coronavirus pandemic?
I came to this country more than 15 years ago to pursue a better life. Like millions of immigrants — getting a Master’s degree from an American University, finding a job in the tech industry, and building a life in this land of opportunity was the American dream that I pursued. I am questioning my life choices today.
Trump seems to have given up on the Coronavirus. First, he called it a “hoax” and it was going to go away, and now he is saying this is something we have to “live with”. Instead of working with medical experts and scientists, he is breaking ties with WHO at such a critical time. Instead of working with the states where the virus outbreaks are surging, he is bullying them to re-open their economy and worse, to re-open their schools.
Early on in the pandemic, experts had said — to control the virus, increase the testing. We are still lacking in the testing numbers in a lot of states. And the states that are doing a decent amount of testing have huge amounts of test backlog. One of my friends was sick and went in for a COVID-19 test 12 days ago and he is still awaiting his results. It’s appalling!
All President Trump cares about is opening the economy — he wants people to go to work so that the job numbers look good for his upcoming re-election campaign. The President seems to be invested in being re-elected and not in saving American lives. His slogan should be changed to “Make Trump Rich Again”. Because he surely is not putting in the work to make America great again!
To witness the downfall of the US in the world order is horrifying, to say the least. Every other country, big or small, has done better at controlling the spread of the virus. This country, which has the best medical minds and the best hospitals, is leading the world in the number of Coronavirus cases and the number of deaths today.
This is not about politics; this is about the President’s incompetence. About his lack of empathy. About his abject failure. He has given up on the pandemic. The lack of leadership and a unified approach is hurting the American people. The country seems to be polarized over everything — even the simplest thing as wearing masks. More than 134,000 people have perished because of the virus, and the President still hasn’t advocated wearing masks — purely for vanity reasons.
Something that other countries advocated and adopted in the early days of the pandemic, we are still not convinced that wearing masks will save lives. Masks have become a symbol of politics and everything that is wrong with the political system.
We are facing the worst public health crisis of our lifetimes. The US keeps breaking its record of most new cases added in a day. And yet, the President is bent upon opening up the schools and colleges, come fall. In a drastic move, it was announced that thousands of international students will face deportation if all their courses are online. If this is not arm-twisting the schools and colleges to open, what is? He has rejected the safety guidelines that the CDC provided for reopening the schools, saying they are impractical and expensive.
He has threatened to withhold funding from schools if they don’t re-open soon. He is willing to put children, teachers, their families in harm’s way only because he thinks it will help his campaign.
It’s incredible to see that other nations like Canada have been so effective in their response and have controlled the spread of the virus efficiently. The United States of America is hardly acting “united”. 50 states have handled the crisis independently and not together as a nation. The absence of leadership and communication from the White House has cost American lives.
The virus has made it clear that it preys on the weak and doesn’t recognize state borders. The fault lines in American democracy are letting the virus thrive. Any person other than the one currently sitting in the White House would be better qualified and would do a better job in this time of crisis.
Mr. President, you have failed America!
