Why do cats love boxes?

As any cat lover knows, cats are obsessed with boxes. But WHY they love boxes is not that obvious to us.

Cats love boxes for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that they are confined, enclosed spaces that make them feel safe and warm. Cats are ambush predators and finding confined places where they can hide, hunt prey and feel safe is an instinctive behavior. Snug cardboard boxes fit the bill perfectly.

Another reason your cat loves boxes is warmth. A cat’s normal body temperature can range from 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38 to 39 degrees Celsius), which is higher than humans. That means that they’re most comfortable in settings anywhere from 86 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit (30 to 36 degrees Celsius). Humans keep their homes around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius), though, so cardboard boxes provide that extra insulation for your cat.

Another reason they love boxes so much is because they are fun to play with. Boxes provide cats with a place to hide and pounce on unsuspecting prey (or toys) as they walk by. Cats love to play and boxes provide them with endless entertainment. They can jump in and out of them, scratch them, and even take naps in them.

Cats also find boxes physically comforting. Boxes can greatly reduce a cat’s stress and help cats regulate their body temperatures.
