Why Did Skin Color Ever Matter?

I’m disgusted. I’m sad. I’m heartbroken. I’m in shock.

This is the 21st century and nothing has changed.

People are still being discriminated against simply because of their skin color.

Why did skin color ever matter?

Who set the precedent that it was okay to hate someone because of the color of their skin?

Who came up with this idea? Why did this idea permeate throughout history?

Why do we judge people based on their race?

Why don’t we simply see people as human beings?

We are all the same.

We have the same problems, same issues, same daily struggles..

We feel the same joys, happiness, sorrows, longing..

Why don’t we band together and connect with one another?

Why don’t we learn something from one another?

Why do we have to be divided?

We should lift each other up, work towards building unity.

Will anyone ever answer these questions?

Will anyone sit back and relax despite the chaos ensuing in this world and actually ponder over this fact?

When will it end?

When will we create acceptance in our hearts?

When will we start seeing people by their souls and not by their race and ethnicity?

It’s the collective society that teaches us prejudice and racism.

No one is born that way, we’re all conditioned to be that way..

Isn’t it time to change?

It’s up to us to make a change, educate people around us, call them out on their unjustified hatred and prejudices and tell them that it’s not okay. It will never be okay.

We have a responsibility.

A responsibility to make sure that the generations to come aren’t taught this kind of hatred.

Let’s love one another and embrace one another as we are.

Let’s teach one another love, tolerance and acceptance.

To all my brothers and sisters from the Black community who suffered at the hands of racial prejudices, I am so sorry.

This world is really unfair.

This is a world where one race can get away with things simply because they have that privilege.

I see this world, and all that resides in me is helplessness.

Will we live to see a day where these injustices are no longer an issue?

Will we live to see a day where the color of your skin won’t be held against you?

Which brings me back to the same question; Why did skin color ever matter?
