Why Democracy Does Not Work
What virus eats it up
All around the world, it shares one trait. It does not work well but might start to, with a will to care.
To care
Unfortunately, society is careless. But, hold on, it is us. So, we are such. Whenever a man fills his needs: he has a job, thus money for food, bills, vacation, and so on, he will step out on everybody and everything. In general, society does not care about others. It cares about nothing more than self needs.
Why?
Well, not because we are arrogant or lazy as it might seem. Not at all. Most likely, people do not believe they are members of the same team and even not wish to be in there. The history, culture, and traditions of a country should unite the nation. Unfortunately, such abstracts do not glue well. So, instead, we keep saying, “someone else will do this,” “it is not my problem,” and the best one, “I have no time for this.” Believe that you have if you only want. But do not you, right?
To test it by yourself, try to name the dates of the five most important national days of your country without googling for them. Have you passed?
Not seeing an inch beyond own’s nose is natural. The density of care is distance-related, and we all do that, more or less. But who cares about the government or unknown people? It is so away from me. Ask anybody, and he will tell you that all politicians make promises which are never granted. Hence, I am not even sure why and for who I am voting. But, I will make my cross on a voting card once per few years because I am a patriot. Yeah, so many wrongs.
Once on TV, you can see protesting farmers because a drought destroyed all their crops. They went on the streets to be heard. What will society do? Am I a farmer? Well, I am not. Lucky me. So, I do not care and switch the channel.
Another time, someone started fundraising for one’s expensive medication. The person could not afford it all by himself. The foundation wants to help him, asking everybody, including you, for a little donation. What will society do? Do I know him? I have never seen you in my entire life. Sorry, but I have another payment to make. I cannot help you, but do not worry, someone else will do it. Who? Exceptions of society. There is always one per a few thousands who care.
Here comes the catch. Sooner or later, something serious will happen to you or to someone you care about. That is how life works, and maybe you experienced that already. Depending on what it will be, you will take proper action: going on the streets, starting fundraising, or so. All those options have a common denominator, and that is asking for help. But, what past you would say or do? Yeah, you are right, you would switch the channel. Yet, now it is someone else who did that. You have no control over the pilot anymore.
We are connected as never but separated as always.
See others around, and you will be happier. Give a part of yourself for those who deserve it. Little things like holding doors open for somebody could make someone’s day. Try it by yourself, guaranteed no regret.
Do you want to be in one team now or still not? Be prepared for a storm because it is going towards you, for sure. No matter how just be ready for it.
To act
A day like always. After morning routines, you left your home, going to the bus station from which you travel to work. Once there, you see some known faces, wishing each a nice day and waiting for a bus.
But then, someone starts to beat up a man, on your and other’s eyes. He needs some help, but will he get one? What will you do? Because he is looking worst and worst with each second passed. Pause. You did not make it on time. The bandit ran away since the boy’s breath is dead. He died.
Could the ongoing situation look different if the nearby people decided to act? Yes, but they did not. Anyone asked why would say about feeling frozen like an ice cube. Because he was alone, and the attacker had a knife. No, no, and once more, no. He was not alone. There were many people around. But somehow all had forgotten about that.
Humans' behavior resembles water waves. There might be nobody in a queue, but when one would join, others want to be in there too.
At the bus station, what would saved this boy’s life is a single pebble dropped on there, which would start a wave flow. When one brave man steps in, many will follow him: not everybody, but many.
Looking around to catch eye contact with each person could help decide about taking action because it tells a lot. Without words, people can unite under one flag. And act. So, check out others’ eyes, and you will know what to do in any critical situation.
Many people gave their lives for our right to vote. Thus, do not make their suffering goes for nothing. Vote, but do it with consciousness. Vote for and not against somebody. If there is no politics worth your cross, do not vote at all. By not participating in an election, but with consciousness, you vote too. You show that nobody has your support. And that is all right.
But, after giving it a little thought, you discover that democracy is not what it should be. And it is the climax of this story.
Democracy over Particracy
Democracy has been taken away by political parties. From the bottom to the very top, corruption blooms. Citing Asterix, where should one go to hide a tree? To a forest, of course! Here the same, where should one go to sneak whatever he wants? Of course, to a political party! Yeah, maybe even a tree will fit in there.
On an election day, all voting cards have names on them, and people vote for a politician with who their world-view connects. A variety of candidates spread out like a rainbow. Everyone could pick a favorite color.
A while after counting the votes, all those colors collapse into a few. Many of them into blue, some into green, maybe red too, and that is it. Where are others? Where is purple I vote for! It has been put in a bag and drowned in an ocean’s abyss.
This state of affairs has two reasons. Politicians could promise whatever they want during the campaign. They have rights without any obligations. They feel inviolability because of the strongback given by political parties. But, there is a cure for this illness, a contract.
It would solve the problem of dishonest, unworthy politicians.
People should choose among politicians not based on promises made but on obligations written on contracts. Before election day, those should be assigned for people could decide who to vote for. What written must be respected; otherwise, a politician is out. Everything comes into play, even an obligation to mowing lawns.
Political parties are supporting people who succeed in nothing. Promising them power and money, in return, ruling only their souls. People who do not have strong moral fundament will fall into this trap, and once in there, there is no way out. From then, they have nothing beyond it because they never had. They stay manageable or die.
Political parties do not care about your country but only about themself.
Only people who had success in something should go to politics because they could always turn back and walk away. Professors, doctors, experts in various fields, should be welcome. Smart and honest people will always find a common language.
I have seen it, and yeah, political parties are the source of the problem. And let it be the final dot (for now) because I do not want to go too far. Maybe next time, I will write about what possible scenarios for the future are.
Fun fact for relaxing the atmosphere because nothing divides as politics does. Have you known that the UN has a subsidiary body for 👽s appearing?
