Summary

The article discusses the misconception that curation is the sole path to success on Medium, emphasizing the importance of writing consistently, exploring various genres, and building trust with the audience.

Abstract

The author, Sahil Patel, reflects on their journey of writing on Medium for over a year, initially believing that getting articles curated was crucial for success. Despite the challenge of not getting curated for 11 months, Patel's commitment to writing led to eventual curation, though it didn't result in the expected high views and engagement. The author argues that curation does not guarantee more views, money, or audience appreciation. Instead, success on Medium can be achieved by writing passionately about topics one loves, diversifying writing genres, maintaining consistency, and focusing on winning the audience's trust. Patel suggests that these strategies are more effective than relying solely on curation.

Opinions

  • Curation on Medium is not a definitive measure of success; it does not guarantee increased visibility, earnings, or audience approval.
  • Writing from the heart and on a variety of subjects can attract a wider readership and create a more satisfying writing experience.
  • Consistency in writing is key, regardless of the immediate performance of individual articles.
  • Building trust with the audience is more valuable than focusing on curation.
  • The true success on Medium comes from a writer's dedication to their craft and engagement with their readers, rather than external validation such as curation.

Why Curation Is Not The Only Way To Succeed On Medium

There’s always a way if you are committed

I started writing on Medium in April 2020. I celebrated my first anniversary on 1st April on Medium.

It was moment of joy because Medium made me blogger, poet and writer. Medium make me better everyday as a writer.

Medium gives a room for improvement to each and every writer.

When I first joined Medium, I didn’t know how to design my article. Where I have to make fonts bold and where I should make a paragraph. I was completely a beginner.

After researching a lot about Medium, I came to know about Curation on Medium. Because I am a non-native English writer I thought it would be hard for me to get curated. If you want to get curated on Medium, your article has to follow the guidelines given by the Medium curators.

I tried my best every time to get curated. I thought once I get curated on Medium, I will be successful on Medium.

I was in curation jail for 11 months. If you are beginner on Medium, I feel your pain of not getting curated. Sometimes, it’s really suffocating cause there are many writers on Medium whom each and every article got curated.

However, I was so surprised that when I was celebrating my first anniversary and my article got curated for the very first time.

I was so happy because I never expected that Medium will give me a gift by curating my article for first time.

I thought that now my article will get a thousands of views. On the opposite side, my curated article didn’t get much views and reads.

I mostly write poetry on Medium. My popular poetry have more views, fans and responses rather than my curated article.

What I have learned from curation?

(1) Curation will not guaranteed you to get more views:-

Many of you thought that curation will give your article more views and exposure but believe me, it’s not true at all. On the other side, if you will receive more views in some cases you will not get more reads and fans.

(2) Curation will not guaranteed you to get more money:-

If you are writing on Medium, just to make money believe me you will not make more money on Medium if your article got curated.

(3) Curation will not guaranteed you that audience will like your article:-

If you think that once your article got curated, it will be liked by each and every audience. Then you are wrong there. You will not get more fans on your every curated article.

Then what works on Medium?

Curation is not the only way to get success on Medium. Even if it is for you, but it’s not worked for me. I am here sharing my own experience.

(1)Write what you love:-

When you write from your heart, believe me everyone wants to read your stuff. So, write what you love and enjoy.

(2)Try to write on different genres:-

Don’t write on the same topics again and again. If you want to get more followers, try to write in different genre everyday to attract the different readers.

Every reader has their own taste of reading.

So, try to write differently and experiment with your writing.

(3)Be Consistent:-

If you are writing in Medium, you will have to accept one thing that your every article will not gonna go viral. Some of your articles may perform much more that you didn’t expect.

On the other side, some of your articles that you wrote by doing a real hard work might not get much attention. So, accept that whether your article performs better or not, you have to be consistent with your writing.

(4)Win the trust of your audience:-

Rather thinking of getting curated, try to win the trust of your audience.

I believe that as a writer my duty is to make my reader happy and satisfied by my writing.

So, try to win the trust of your reader. Trust is built with consistency.

Last but not least, whether your article gets curated or not just commit to your writing; that is the only way that makes you succeed on Medium.
