Abstract

lia and England ‘took over’ the ICC. Dubbed as the Big Three, the cricket boards of these countries manipulated the game in their favor by giving them more matches, international tournament windows that does not hamper their domestic league matches and making sure they get the most revenue.

Basically, India, Australia and English teams play more international matches than Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies. The Big Three teams have more screen time which paves the way for broadcasting rights and ad revenue. Cricketers are part of commercials being aired during matches. ICC Tournaments like the World Cup and World T20 are organized in a way the Big Three teams can play the most and get more screen time. Why cricket is not as global as football (soccer)?

Image screenshotted from Yahoo

Cricket is not known or played as much as football (soccer in America). Cricket is not even part of the Olympics. Although the game attracts a huge following from where it’s played, particularly in South Asian countries, it has not reached the heights where FIFA has put football despite the corruption attached to it.

Cricket is complicated! It has three formats, Tests, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. There is a lot to digest for a person who has not grown up watching cricket. Baseball, in my opinion, is more complicated and restricted. This sport seems like an American thing. However, the US has done a great job in promoting baseball thanks to its stadiums, sponsorships, movies and its presence in the summer.

Countries where cricket is popular has done the same with their own leagues. The Indian Premier League in India, Big Bash League (men and women) in Australia and the Pakistan Super League in Pakistan are big, attracting huge audiences in stadiums and televisions. However, cricket leagues have to take initiative in countries where it’s not watched as much as football.

Here are reasons why cricket is not going as big as football worldwide.

Formats and Leagues

Again, cricket has three formats; Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Tests lasts five days! Yet a winner is not imminent most of the time. Teams get to bat and ball in twice. If the team fails to reach its final target, it doesn’t lose but draws the match. This is an off-putter for individuals who watch sports for a win or loss result. A match tied is rare in Tests.

ODIs and T20Is are shorter. The former is 50 overs while the latter is 20 overs (by its name). Even that could last more depending on how the game is played and in what circumstances. T20s have enabled the game to be quicker and more entertaining. Traditionalists of the game like Imran Khan are not fans of the shorter format because it’s not Test cricket. The man lived on the longest format. No wonder he became Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Football (soccer) lasts 90 minutes minus added time. World Cup Knockouts could go up to Penalty Shoot-Outs which makes the game exciting. You know there is a time limit. Cricket depends on its overs. Even limited-over matches (ODIs and T20s) can get longer. Plus, there are a lot of leagues in football; English Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A. Even Saudi Arabia has a football league which has Christiano Ronaldo.

Big Three (or Big One)

Cricket is governed by the International Cricket Council. Every country has its own cricket boards; English Cricket Board, Australian Cricket Board, Board of Control for Cricket in India, Pakistan Cricket Board. About a decade ago, the cricket boards of India, Australia and England ‘took over’ the ICC.

This does not allow space for teams of other countries to play matches. In the 2007 World Cup, 16 teams were participating versus the 2019 World Cup with only 10 teams. The 2023 Men’s World Cup to be played in India, it will also have 10 teams. Meaning the Big Three can play more matches. Compare that to 32 teams participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Rules

Rules of cricket differ by format. Test matches have a different format than ODIs and T20s. Tests not only have unlimited overs but some different rules. For example, a no-ball is when a bowler oversteps on the crease. The batsperson can only get out on a no-ball through a run-out. That means, if he/she is caught or bowled, the batsperson cannot walk back to the pavilion. In ODIs and T20s however, there’s a free-hit added to it. Meaning, a batsperson can try to hit it out of the park but if caught, cannot get out.

Another example of a no-ball is when the bowler bowls above shoulder-waist to the batsperson that makes it for a difficult play. The most controversial aspect of a no-ball in T20s came in the Pakistan-India match in the WorldTwenty20 2022. Virat Kohli hit a six from a no-ball which was above his waist. The next ball was wide. The next ball, it hit Kohli’s stumps but India managed to get the runs. It became controversial because some complained that runs cannot be scored from a no-ball if it hit the stumps. Nevertheless, it was the umpire’s decision and India won the match.

I didn’t personally watch the match but as I found out about it, I was like what? Cricket is a complicated sport and this is why it’s not popular globally as football (soccer). Coming back to the beautiful game, you know all rules of soccer are homogenous. An offside in leagues is no different than an offside in international matches.

India vs Pakistan

This is the reason why I stopped watching cricket. I understand rivalries are a natural part of sport. Real Madrid vs Barcelona, the Manchester Derby, Manchester United vs Leeds United, Yankess vs Red Sox. Cricket also has Australia vs England (the Ashes in Tests). India vs Pakistan definitely is one of the most intense sports rivalries. It attracts huge crowds, sponsorships, ticket sales, viewer-ships on television and streaming platforms. Yet, it has become toxic due to never-getting-better relations between India and Pakistan.

Social media gets toxic with memes and insults going back and forth among Indian and Pakistani fans during Pakistan vs India matches. Television commentators and cricketing ‘experts’ hurl insults at each other on television platforms. Fans even fight on the streets and people smash their television sets. Not to mention people get arrested in India and Pakistan if they are caught cheering for the opposite team.

The rivalry has become more complicated with the Big Three. India’s BCCI has the biggest stake in the ICC. Its Indian Premier League (IPL) has banned Pakistani players over the 2008 Mumbai Attacks and forbids Indian players to participate international leagues. One reason could be Pakistani players playing in Big Bash and PSL. According to the agreement with the Big Three, India and Pakistan were to tour and play matches in each other countries. That has not been possible because of the Indian government’s nothing-to-do-with-Pakistan policy.

Verdict

A sport has to flourish by bringing people together. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar might be the most controversial due to its human rights issues but it was also one of the best World Cups according to football lovers. Qatar enabled an atmosphere that brought people from around the world together despite the country’s small size.

This year’s Men’s Cricket World Cup will only have ten teams. How can you attract more countries if the game is restricted? India hosting the World Cup means very little to few Pakistanis will be able to watch in stadiums. Who will cheer for the Pakistani team in India?

The more you isolate yourself from sports, the more tensions and distances are going to grow. They say keep politics away from sports. It is not possible given the circumstances cricket has fallen into.
