Why Commenting On Someone’s Post Will Increase Your Following

Your comment is important to them and to you

You need to be commenting on other people’s work.

You just do. It is one of the sure-fire ways of growing your following. It shows your interest in them, it gives other people a place to find you, and it can even boost your views and reads on your posts.

And, it’s not a dirty trick to building a following.

Over the last several months, I have been making an effort to leave responses and comments on articles I like a lot. Not simply ‘nice guy’ comments either. But hearty, meaty comments to learn more about the topic at hand.

What I have noticed in doing this is how it is increasing my view stats (yes, some of these are from the comments themselves), but I have seen an uptick in followers, which is a pleasant surprise.

As I have started to really dig deeper into this, I have found a few benefits to go with commenting on other people’s work and a few ways to do this well.

Benefits of Leaving a Comment

When we leave comments, we already know that we could get nothing back from the person we leave a quick note with. It’s just the way it is. Shoot, for a long time, I was terrible at responding to a comment.

However, we also know there can be some incredible opportunities with leaving comments on people’s posts. These opportunities could lead to a lot of great things for you in the future.

So, I want to share a few benefits for leaving comments.

№1 — Starts a Conversation

Sometimes, when we disagree with someone’s post, but it was well written and had interesting information in it, we can comment and share our thoughts.

This opens the door to starting a conversation.

If the author feels inclined to connect with you on the topic you will likely learn something new and have a newfound appreciation for the other idea. It also helps you connect with someone you wouldn’t normally connect with naturally.

This conversation can lead to a mutually beneficial relationship in reading, sharing, and encouraging each other’s stories. I have found this to be true on many occasions.

№2 — Comments on Medium Are Considered Individual Posts

“Responses are posts. They are the same object in the system. They live at their own URL and can have responses and all the other features of posts on their own.” — Ev Williams via Casey Botticello’s post.

These are essentially extra stories to add to your content on Medium. And if you don’t think people will follow your comment back to your profile, you’d be missing out.

I had a comment that had almost a hundred views. When I posted it, I started noticing people going through my most recent posts and pinned posts. The claps, highlights, and responses on these blew me away.

These “mini” posts in our comments help drive traffic in ways that may not pay directly but could lead to new connections.

No.3 — Comments Help With Networking

Your comments on other people’s work can help open doors to new opportunities.

I remember last year, I left a comment on Tom Kuegler’s LinkedIn and he reached out to connect via direct message. We have stayed in touch and I ended getting a lot of helpful insight from him while I would purchase two of his courses.

However, it’s always great to stay in contact and learn something from other writers. No matter our stage on Medium we can learn from and share knowledge with our community.

Final Thought

Comments and responses are not about making money. And honestly, they aren’t about getting immediate views. These are things you can get by writing and publishing five stories a day.

Comments and responses are about creating connections.

You will have conversations with people and learn about new things. You will create something people can trackback to you. And you will build a network with people who are steps ahead, behind, and rift next to you.

This is how comments and responses will help build your following.

As you grow, you will have more and more of these connections. The more connections you have, the better you will be able to grow your following.

So, go out there and start connecting, having conversations, and creating more breadcrumbs to your work!
