Why College Is The Most Liberating Time Of Your Life

“The larger you expand your radius of knowledge, the larger the circumference of the unknown also becomes” -Vsauce, The Berkeley Forum

Ever since coming to college, I have tried to pinpoint what has made my time here so fulfilling.

  • Was it the late nights spent playing Cards against Humanity and Werewolf? Nah.
  • Was it the amazing people I have met on my dorm? Not completely.
  • Was it the regulars that play open gym volleyball with me? Hmm not quite.
  • Or was it the mind-blowing faculty and the abundance of knowledge here? Closer, but not exactly.

It wasn’t that these events weren’t fun or enjoyable, it’s just that they weren’t the deciding factor.

So what was it?

Over the past few weeks I have been trying to figure out the one facet of my college experience that embodies the reason behind why I enjoy life in college so much. After all the parties, the homework, the club applications, and the late night talks with my roommates, sometimes everything can seem pretty overwhelming. Yet, why do I still find myself excited to wake up every morning?

After attending a talk at the Berkeley Forum with one of my role models, the founder of VSauce Michael Stevens, I finally had my answer. One line he said in particular stood out to me:

When somebody learns one thing, they also learn about the existence of twenty more things. The more that you discover, the less you realize you actually know.

Everything came into place for me. What was most important was not one aspect, but rather the unlimited potential that flows through everything that I have experienced here.

The future is limitless.

Even though there is uncertainty within the minds of us students, we have the ability to pursue so many different things. Whether it’s dance, music, startups, a hidden love for underwater basket-weaving, sports, video games, napping, or anything else you can think of: you have the resources to aspire towards it. The freedom and excitement that comes with the realization of the vastness of how little I know is something I couldn’t have found anywhere else.

So in lieu of all your assignments, midterms, clubs, and whatever else you may be overwhelmed with at this moment, take some time to consider the bigger picture.

Make sure to live a little,

To dream a bit,

And to go on and achieve whatever your heart desires.
