Summary

Children paint the sun in the corner of their drawings because that's how they perceive it with their eyes when looking at the sun, not due to an understanding of its actual position in the sky.

Abstract

The article discusses the common tendency of children to depict the sun in the corner of their paintings. This phenomenon is attributed to the children's perspective; they draw what they see at the moment, which is often the sun appearing in the corner of their vision when they look towards it. The article emphasizes that children's art is not about reality but about their current perception. When standing in front of the sun, it is natural for it to appear in one's peripheral vision, hence the corner placement in their artwork. The author, Agnes Laurens, recalls her own experience and that of her daughters and friends' children, reinforcing the idea that this is a common behavior among young artists. The piece also mentions that Agnes has shared this observation on Quora and invites readers to subscribe to her mailing list for updates on her upcoming Patreon page and to read her thoughts on her Substack.

Why Children Paint The Sun In The Corner

Children think only what they see at that moment. Not what the actual view is. They, most of the children, don’t know what the reality is. They will learn a little bit by little bit that some things are not real as they think it will be or as they see it through their eyes.

We know the sun is round and hot, we know the sun strong sometimes and many more facts we know about the sun. The reason why children paint the sun in the corner is not really strange, I believe. I do understand that part, actually.

Why the sun is in the corner

When you stand in front of the sun, you see the sun in one of your eye corners. And not in the middle of your eyes or wherever the view takes you. When you paint the sun in the corner of the paper, it is because the view of your eyes gave you that particular view.

Look when you hold the paper in front of the sun. What do you see when you hold it there? If I do that, I see that the sun takes over space into the corner. My view of where the sun is, through the view of my eyes.

In reality, the science told differently. But that is not the case here, the case is the view our eyes have.

I can remember I did that, I can remember all my three daughters did that too. I have seen friends of my children doing that too.
