Why Can’t We Just Get Along?
There is so much division in the USA
Everyone should be accepted as equal and should be able to get along
There will always be opposition in all things. It will be difficult for people to come to agreement when there are opposing views. There is so much division in the United States right now between the two major political parties that they just can’t seem to get along. It is the same in the general public. There is too much hate in this life.
People who had served in Congress from years past have lamented the fact that there is so much division and discord in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. They state that members from opposing parties used to be friends and be able to get along. They could agree to disagree. They would debate issues and come to a compromise. That does not seem to happen now.
There is so much contention in the Capitol and in politics.
Rodney King was a young man when he was beat on March 3, 1991, by the police in the Los Angeles area. After a high speed chase, King was caught by the police. An uninvolved individual who lived nearby happened to film the incident from his balcony. He sent the footage to a local news station. It showed King on the ground being beaten severely. It seemed to be a racist act.
There was public outrage over the treatment of an unarmed Black man by the police officers. After the police officers were acquitted of the beating, riots and chaos broke out in Los Angeles. There were fires and looting.
King seemed sorry that so many problems were occurring because of him.
After many days of rioting, King made the following statement:
People, I just want to say, you know, can we, can we all get along? Can we get along? Um, can we stop making it, making it hard for the older people and the kids and I mean, we’ve got enough smog here in Los Angeles, let alone to get killed with setting these fires and things.
We should be asking those words now: “Can we get along?” Why can’t we get along? The current division within the United States seems unprecedented. More love, caring, and peace are needed throughout this country and the world.
