Why Being Demotivated Is Amazing, If You Positively Overcome It

I’m tired and don’t wanna do anything… why is that?

I’ve Been in a Rut Lately…

I’ll be super honest and transparent with you. I feel like crap. I don’t wanna do anything. I don’t wanna see anyone. I don’t wanna work. (although I don’t know if that one is solely the rut’s fault)

I also know this is abnormal… Kinda. Lemme explain. Being demotivated isn’t the abnormal part. Being demotivated is good for you, and I’m gonna tell you why. First, the abnormal part.

Why did I say this was abnormal? Was it because I don’t wanna do anything when I’m typically a busybody? Was it because I don’t wanna see anyone when my friends know I can be the neediest person on the planet at times? Is it because I, being the overachiever that I am, am suddenly coasting?

It’s all of those things… and none of them at the same time.

More so, it’s all of those things. Doing all of them at the same time. Life can throw a lot at you. At the same time, it can all feel out of your control. I wanna learn how to rock climb, but I’m feeling lazy and don’t have the time. I wanna lay in bed, but I have 2 birthdays to go to this weekend in two different cities. I wanna progress and take on extra projects at work but I’m drowning as is.

Am I crazy for trying to do all of these things at once? Maybe.

None of these things on their own is the problem. That’s my big takeaway here. Isolated, it’s fine. Together, I’m teetering on burning out.

Now, this is just my current situation. Something more important is hidden under all of this though.

The demotivation came first.

I’m teetering on burning out. I’m not there yet.

I Slept How Many Hours?

Looking for an answer, I looked in the first place any reasonable person would look. At my text messages first thing after I woke up. I didn't find any answers there.

What did happen was I got a notification from my sleep tracking app. I honestly don't use it that often because I’d have to sleep with my Apple Watch on. Being so tired I accidentally did and the results shocked me.

I thought that I had gotten about 8 hours of sleep. The universe laughed in my face and gave me 4 and a half hours. Uhhhhhh what…

I don’t think that this is the most accurate and should probably get an Oura Ring or something to track my sleep a little better. Thinking that I slept from 12 am to 8 am and then was told that 4 and a half of those hours counted. I was a little shocked.

Alright, why does this matter to you? Well if you haven’t seen it yet. My sudden “demotivation” was a signal.

Something was off.

Reading the Signs

Back to demotivation being a positive thing. If you look at it through a different lens, we’re often told that if you’re demotivated you’re just being lazy. You’re not working hard enough. You just need to power through.

That’s not healthy. Surprisingly our bodies try and do what’s best for us when needed. In my situation, my demotivation was my body leading me to take on less load because I didn’t have the energy for it. Maybe that’s a naive take. Maybe I’m oversimplifying things. Maybe I’m right.

The key takeaway here is that when you’re demotivated don’t just chalk it up to you being lazy or apathetic. Sometimes that’s the case, but I feel like there’s probably an underlying reason as to why you’re suddenly “not feeling it” more often than not.

There’s a quote that’s stuck with me for a while.

“Life is filled with peaks and valleys. The key is to keep the valleys short and to elongate the peaks.”

I look at the demotivation as being a sign of why I’m in the valley in the first place. Then subsequently, a clue about what I needed to do to get out of the valley and back to chasing peaks.

Remember to read the signs and you’ll be alright!

Figure out why you’re demotivated and dig yourself out of the rut. You got this!
