Why Are So Many People Dying in Their 50s and 60s?
Wherein I freak out about Sinéad O’Connor’s death and my daughter makes everything worse

“Did you see Sinéad O’Connor died?” I ask my husband.
“Yeah, so sad.”
“Doesn’t it seem like a lot of people in their 50s and 60s are dying lately? Do you think it’s Covid related? The numbers just seem high.”
“Could be, but also it could just be you noticing.”
“What, you mean because I’m in my 50s?”
My 22-year-old daughter, always quick on the Google trigger finger, joins the conversation. “Sinead was 56. That’s your age.”
Thank you, child. I knew that.
“No cause of death listed yet. Name someone else who’s died recently. I’ll look them up.”
“Umm, can’t think of any names at the moment.” Early signs of memory loss?
“That’s okay. I’ll look it up.”
Give this girl Google and a goal and there’s no stopping her. Trust me, I’ve tried. I attempt to ignore her by reading my comforting zombie apocalypse novel, but she keeps interrupting.
“Anna Shay, do you know her? Age 62. Stroke.”
“Ray Stephenson. 58. No cause of death released.”
“Paul Grant. Hey, he was also 56 like you and Sinead. They found him collapsed outside of King’s Cross Station.”
“Lance Reddick. Age 60. Natural causes. That doesn’t narrow it down much, does it?”
“Tom Sizemore. 61. Aneurysm.”
“Tatjana Patitz. Another 56-year-old. Metastatic breast cancer.”
“Lisa Loring. 64. Stroke due to high blood pressure.”
“Lisa Marie Presley. 54. Huh, this is interesting. They thought she died of cardiac arrest, but turns out it was a small bowel obstruction, probably due to her gastric bypass years ago.”
This is not interesting you ghoul. I set down my zombie book.
“I don’t think I need to hear anymore.” It doesn’t matter that I only recognize a few of the names. The damage is done.
“Well, I don’t think you need to worry that deaths in 50–60-year-olds are unusually high. Almost all of this just sounds like the results of natural aging to me.”
Why you little…
“That isn’t exactly comforting.” She seems surprised by my statement.
Listen, baby girl. These people died in the prime of life. 50s and 60s is not old. I’ll admit the definition of old is a moving target. But it has clear parameters. Old is, and always has been, whatever age my mother is.
Oh.
