Why Are Clothes Made For Plus-Sized Women So Ugly?

The fashion industry has let us down!

No plus-sized woman plans to be plus-sized. Many of us start ours lives thin and gradually put on a few pounds here and there. Then, one day we realize that our weight has gotten out of control.

Once the truth hits us, we start to diet. Some of us are successful, but quite often, a lot of us are not.

We try this diet and that diet but overall, we discover that diets don’t work. Either our body rebels, or we can’t keep things going. Then, as we get older, we find out that the weight just hangs on even for those of us who eat right and exercise.

With that being said, just because we are plus-sized doesn’t mean that we don’t like pretty things! We are beautiful, and we want to dress pretty, just like all of the other women out there.

Shopping is a chore if you are plus-sized. First of all, stores have given us new names like “plus-sized” or “curvy.” Then, when we go to the plus-size department, we see that our allotment of clothes is in the smallest area possible with limited styles available. It doesn’t help when we look across the aisle and see all of the beautiful clothes available for “regular” women.

Of course, there are stores just for plus-sized women, but once inside, the prices are high, and sales are few and far between. They may offer a better selection than a traditional department store, but the choices are still limited compared to “regular” sized women.

I have a hard time shopping in those kinds of stores because there aren’t any plus-size stores in my town; I would have to travel thirty or more miles to get to one.

So most plus-sized women do a lot of ordering online. The problem with this is that since we don’t get to try the clothes on, we may not like them or they might not fit and they need to be sent back.

One of my favorite tv shows was Project Runway. Like many plus-sized babes, I loved the styles presented by Ashley Nell Tipton in Season 14. She designed with the plus-size women in mind, and it certainly helped that she too was plus-sized. She won the show that season, but there was criticism that it was “fixed.” I guess plus-sized women shouldn’t be the winner of a fashion show?

There are a few top plus-sized models out there like Tess Holiday and Ashley Graham. Still, overall the modeling industry isn’t interested in plus-sized models, and the clothing industry isn’t interested in creating plus-size clothing.

This lack of consideration for plus-sized women is echoed by society in general. We aren’t considered worthy of having nice clothes or being represented in advertisements by people who look like us. It’s as if we don’t deserve to be here.

I invite you to go to the nearest department store and look for the plus-size department and see what is available for yourself. I can save you the trip, though. But, for the most part, what few clothes there are will be ugly!

I don’t want to wear a caftan. I don’t want huge red flowers on my clothes. I don’t want to dress all in black. Every pair of pants that I see are black. I have a drawer full of em. I want some pants that are bright blue (to match my hair), some hot pink ones, and my favorite color is teal!

The next thing that plus-sized women want you to know is that we don’t want to wear a bag!

I noticed that a couple of the plus-sized women who competed in last season’s The Voice TV show had on some very tight clothing. At first, I didn’t like their clothes. I thought that they were too tight. But then, I began to realize that I, too, was falling for the hype that plus-sized women can’t wear tight, sexy clothing.

Now I say we should go for it. If only we could find sexy clothes to wear!

So, ok, Fashion Industry, are you listening?

The plus-sized ladies of America are here, and we want something better from you! Get busy!
