Why Are Black Universities Getting Bomb Threats?
It doesn’t make sense
Traditionally Black colleges and universities are having threats
Racism should have been a thing of the past by now. Since the days of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., racism has been at the forefront of political discussions and social reform. Dr. King and others worked tirelessly against racism. He wanted, and others still want, the United States to be a just and equal society that treats all people fairly.
Many individuals and organizations are continuing the fight for equality and against racism. The racial problems have seemed to escalate during and since the period of Donald Trump’s Presidency. More white supremacists have come out to publicly declare their views of superiority. They do not want an equal society. Some of their views have been accepted by certain segments of the population of the United States.
There have been bomb threats received recently by at least six historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
ABC News reported that Howard University, Bowie State University, Bethune-Cookman University, Southern University, Delaware State University, and Albany State University have all reported potential threats.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is aware of the series of bomb threats and is working with law enforcement to address potential threats.
“As always, we would like to remind members of the public that if they observe anything suspicious to report it to law enforcement immediately,” the FBI said in a statement to ABC News.
As someone who worked in the civil rights arena with non-profit organizations in Washington, D.C. for a number of years, I have been to Howard University on several occasions. I have spoken to students there. Howard is one of the HBCUs which has been targeted.
It is a great school from which some of my friends have graduated. Two were Asian Americans who chose to attend Howard. They received an excellent education there. One was a popular dentist before his passing. Another is a practicing lawyer in Washington, D.C. I also know of some white people who graduated from Howard.
The people who are making these bomb threats are obviously racist and are trying to express their views through these means. They need to be stopped. It will take the rest of us who believe in a just and fair society to take a stand. Racist actions should not be tolerated and accepted. It is a matter of caring for your fellowmen and treating different people with respect.
It will take good people stepping forward to get the racist people to stop. It is a daunting challenge, but it is a worthy effort.
The United States is a diverse nation where all people deserve acceptance, equality, and justice.
[Note: There have been more bomb threats since this was first written, and there have been some persons of interest identified.]
